Doctors in the Czech Republic could soon recommend museum visits, dance classes, singing and creative workshops to people at risk of depression, anxiety or social isolation.
The program, known as Art on Prescription, aims to connect healthcare providers with museums, galleries, libraries and other cultural institutions.
Rather than replacing medication or psychotherapy, these activities would complement existing treatment and help prevent mental health problems.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NUDZ) is preparing a National Platform for Prevention through Culture to bring together cultural organizations, healthcare providers, social services and schools. The goal is to make existing cultural activities more accessible to people who could benefit from them.
The initiative is not intended to turn cultural institutions into medical facilities. Instead, it seeks to use local resources to support mental well-being and strengthen social connections.
Research highlights benefits of cultural activities
International research suggests that participating in cultural and artistic activities can improve well-being, strengthen social ties and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
According to Dominika Grygarová, a researcher at NUDZ, an analysis combining studies from more than 20 countries found significant reductions in symptoms of both depression and anxiety.
The benefits depend not only on exposure to art but also on active participation, Grygarová said. Creating something, learning a new skill, sharing experiences and interacting with others can help people focus on something beyond their difficulties and develop a sense of belonging.
However, the programs are intended primarily as a preventive and supportive measure, not a substitute for professional treatment. Researchers also want to assess their effectiveness and economic value, with preliminary analyses suggesting that some initiatives could be cost-effective.
Czech project looks to Northern Europe
NUDZ plans to build on similar programs already operating in several countries, particularly the United Kingdom and Northern Europe.
The Czech initiative intends to follow the so-called Baltic model, with researchers planning to work with Danish colleagues next year on a European project to introduce the approach more widely.
