The UK government has unveiled an AI-focused security funding package worth approximately £600 million, or about $800 million. Its target is the biological and cyber threats that artificial intelligence could make worse.
The centerpiece is a new AI Biosecurity Lab, described as the world’s first organization dedicated to AI biosecurity.
Where the money goes
The announcement came on October 23, 2026, ahead of the upcoming Budget.
Biosecurity gets the largest themed slice, at £165 million. Of that, £100 million goes to the AI Biosecurity Lab, known as AIBL. Another £65 million is set aside for pathogen countermeasures.
Big Tech is also involved. OpenAI and Anthropic will provide up to £200 million in model credits for the biosecurity effort.
Cyber defence gets £130 million. That money funds two new programmes: the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre.
The rest of the package spreads across several smaller buckets:
- £120 million for the AI Security Institute
- £60 million for a fund backing British companies applying AI to robotics, autonomous systems and manufacturing
- £60 million for AI research and procurement contracts
- £23 million in extra funding to study AI’s economic impact
- £18 million for a new chip design academy
- £15 million for a prize rewarding AI solutions to public policy problems, starting with healthcare
AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said the government wants the biosecurity lab to become a major global institution for protecting against biological threats.
How the UK got here
The package builds on earlier work, notably the AI Security Institute, which was formed in 2023. Its new £120 million allocation suggests the government sees it as core infrastructure, not a pilot.
Earlier in October 2026, Nvidia committed $250 million to support AI safety research in the UK.
What this means
For AI developers, the OpenAI and Anthropic credits reveal how these partnerships now work. The companies offer access to their systems instead of cash.
For cybersecurity firms, the £130 million matters most. National programmes focused on vulnerability exposure and critical infrastructure tend to create procurement demand.
The £60 million robotics and manufacturing fund is aimed at British companies specifically.
The chip design academy addresses a longer-term problem, with £18 million today as a bet on the semiconductor workforce of the next decade.
Credits described as “up to £200 million” set a ceiling, not a guaranteed amount.
