- Jim Nantz and JJ Watt had an unlikely interaction in the booth on Sunday
- The CBS Sports broadcasters demonstrated the “Peanut Punch”
- Nantz, 67, was injured after he tried to punch the football out of Watt’s hands
Jim Nantz got more than he bargained for in the broadcast booth on Sunday!
The legendary CBS play-by-play announcer, 67, injured his wrist in the waning minutes of the Bills-Raiders game after an unlikely demonstration with his partner JJ Watt — who was showing him how to do the “Peanut Punch,” a defensive move utilized by players to steal the football.
“I’ve actually talked to some guys around the league that they do a wrist-lock,” Watt, 37, said. “So now, you lock everything in, Jim, go ahead, give that a good punch.”

“Really?” asked Nantz.

“Hard as you’ve got, brother,” Watt replied.
Nantz then stood up and punched the ball — harder than the former defensive end expected.

“That was so much harder than I thought you were gonna go,” Watt said, laughing. “But the ball stayed!”
All of which had Nantz doubled over in seeming surprise, and laughter.
“My wrist is broken,” he said.
While it is not known whether Nantz did any damage, he did sport an ice pack when the cameras once again caught up with him in the booth after a break.
Nantz and Watt are a new pairing this season after the veteran broadcaster’s longtime partner, Tony Romo, was cut by the network in the wake of his OWI arrest over the summer.
In an interview with Traina Thoughtshost Jimmy Traina published on Wednesday, Oct. 14, Nantz said he and Romo continue to share a great friendship and reflected on the end of an era.
“We started in 2017, we did nine years together. We did three Super Bowls,” Nantz said.
“It’s a forever relationship,” he added about their bond. “It was a great friendship before we got started as teammates on the air. We’ll be friends forever. Nothing changes.”
