Overview
Google Maps traffic colors indicate road conditions, from smooth traffic to heavy delays and closures.
Place icons help identify restaurants, hospitals, shops, transport services, and other nearby locations.
Map layers reveal additional details, including Street View, public transport, cycling paths, and terrain.
Google Maps colors and icons pack a lot of information into one small screen. Traffic, shops, hospitals, and routes all appear through color. Knowing what each mark means helps in finding a place in seconds rather than minutes.
How to Read the Google Maps Legend
Google keeps an official legend in its Maps help pages. It explains colors and symbols for traffic, transit, cycling paths, terrain, and Street View. Think of it as the answer key. The sections below explain the main parts in plain words.
Traffic Colors: How Fast is the Road Moving?
Traffic colors indicate traffic flow. Green represents free-flowing traffic, orange indicates moderate traffic, and red indicates slower traffic, with darker red representing heavier congestion.
These colors describe speed, not distance. A short road in dark red can cost more time than a long road in green. They appear when the traffic layer or navigation is active. Road closures show as a dotted red line, and tapping an incident icon reveals what happened. Google also notes that traffic information is not available everywhere.
Place Icons: Colors that Sort Places
Google introduced color-coded place icons in a redesign announced on November 15, 2017. In that announcement, a search for a coffee shop leads to the nearest orange icon, the color for food and drink. Cafes, churches, museums, and hospitals each received a designated color and icon.
Reports describe the other shades differently, and Google can change them in any update. Its current help page groups nearby places under labels such as food and drink, retail, outdoor attractions, emergency services, and city services. Colors help with quick scanning. Tapping an icon confirms the place name and details.
Lines on the Map: Routes, Transit, Bikes, and Street View
Lines have their own meanings, and context decides which one applies. Route lines can appear in different colors during planning or navigation, depending on the selected route and map display. Blue overlay lines mark where Street View imagery exists, and they appear only when the Street View layer is on. Transit lines show bus, subway, and rail routes.
When possible, their colors match the local transport agency, such as the blue A line in New York. Bike paths use colors to show the type of path. Contour lines show elevation, with gray numbers marking altitude.
Layers: Map Type Versus Map Detail
Layers change the information shown on the map. On Android, tap Layers at the top right. On a computer, click Layers at the bottom left. Maps and satellites change the base view. Details such as traffic, transit, biking, and street view add specific information. Available options vary by device and location, and unavailable ones cannot be selected.

A Simple Habit for Finding Places
Search for the place or service first. Scan nearby icons to compare results. Tap a listing to confirm the name, hours, and location. Switch on traffic or transit before leaving. Color supports the search and does not replace it.

Final Thoughts
Context settles most doubts on Google Maps. Traffic lines compare road conditions, icons identify nearby places, and layers add specific details. When a mark is unclear, opening the relevant layer or the official legend gives a reliable answer.
