The Indian Navy will commission Samarthak, its first of four multi-purpose vessels, at Naval Base, Karwar, on October 16, 2026, the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Delhi, announced on Tuesday.
Built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd under the Government of India's Make in India initiative, Samarthak is designed primarily for maritime surveillance and patrol.
The vessel can undertake Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), serve as a platform for target deployment and trials, and function as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems. It is also equipped for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), can be converted into a limited hospital ship and can undertake salvage operations.
The ship's integrated combat suite combines indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems optimised for operations in challenging maritime conditions.
The crest of Samarthak features an Indian elephant emerging from the waves, symbolising strength, intelligence and agility. Its motto is “Victory is Our Sole Aim.”
