AKRON — Rain looked imminent a few hours before their first-round tee times at the Division II state tournament at Firestone Country Club, but the skies eventually cleared in time to finish their rounds.
That alone was an upgrade over the 2025 state experience for the River View boys and Ridgewood girls golf teams, when they played only one round, instead of two, due to inclement weather.
At the end of the day, the Black Bears found themselves in position to make a second-day charge.
Freshman Lucas Massa shot 2-over-par to lead four scores in the 70s as River View shot 310 to assume second place on the North Course among 12 teams. Defending champion Kettering Alter leads by five shots.
Junior Gavin Gress shot 78 and sophomores Colton Gress and Clark Frischen added 79, while sophomore Ty Woodward had 94 out of the No. 5 spot. Alter, with four scores between 75 and 78, is at 305.
East District champion St. Clairsville, the team that beat River View at the district tournament at EagleSticks, is in third place at 314.
Ottawa-Glandorf (319), Poland Seminary (323), Cincinnati Roger Bacon (328), Williamsport Westfall (331), Gates Mills Gilmour Academy (331), Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (341), Delaware Buckeye Valley (342), Swanton (352) and Lynchburg-Clay (354) round out the field.
St. Clairsville junior Beau Mooney leads the 72-player field with even-par 72, which included a 3-under 33 on the back nine. Mavrik Malin is at 76, Ryan Mooney 79 and Jackson Conway 87.
The Black Bears will tee off on the front nine beginning at 9:20 p.m.
Harstine 15th after Day 1
Ridgewood junior Brynn Harstine shot 7-over-par 79 and sits in a tie for 15th as the Generals finished 11th after one day.
Junior Zoe Martin added 97, Kelly Corbett 110, Kendal Myers 111 and Audrey Tubbs 123 for the Generals, who shot 397.

Harstine shot 37 on the front nine and was among the leaders at the turn but slipped to a back-nine 42.
Her sister, freshman Taylor Harstine, who shot 63 for the top district qualifying score, was not available to play.
Columbus Academy is in first place by 38 shots over second-place Chagrin Falls with 306. Cincinnati Madeira's Ellie Hartung shot 68 and leads Garaway's Kylie Miller, who shot 72 playing as an individual, by four.
Final round tee times begin at 8:30 a.m.
