Two strikers from South Korea's national team, Oh Hyeon-gyu of Besiktas and Cho Gue-sung of Midtjylland, both scored on the same night in European club competition.
Oh recorded two goals and an assist to single-handedly drive his team's 3-2 win at Hoffenheim on the 15th, in the second match of the league phase of the 2026-2027 UEFA Europa League (UEL) at SNP Arena in Hoffenheim, Germany.
Oh, who started the match, began his show in the 60th minute. On a left-side corner kick, he cut into the box and struck a right-footed shot that rolled to Amir Murillo, who tapped it in for the opening goal. UEFA officially credited Oh with the assist.
Oh also proved decisive in the goal-trading contest that followed. Besiktas lost momentum after conceding an equalizer to Fisnik Asllani in the 68th minute, but Oh turned the match around with two goals in the span of just seven minutes. In the 72nd minute, he finished a through ball from Junior Olaitan with his right foot on the counterattack, and in the 79th he launched himself into a sliding shot off a low cross from Ilhan Fakili to make it 3-1.
Oh celebrated his first brace of the season by pulling off his shirt in an emphatic display. The moment washed away the frustration of reduced playing time since the summer arrival of Serbian forward Dusan Vlahovic.
Oh, who began his professional career with Suwon Samsung in the K League, moved on to Celtic in Scotland and Genk in Belgium before joining Turkish powerhouse Besiktas in February this year for a transfer fee of 14 million euros (about 22.3 billion won).
He adapted quickly to the Turkish league with eight goals and four assists in 16 matches in the second half of last season, but endured a difficult stretch as his playing time shrank following Vlahovic's arrival.
Besiktas conceded again to Koki Matsuda in the 88th minute but held on without further damage, extending its league-phase winning run to two matches. With two goals and an assist on the night, added to one goal and one assist in UEL qualifying and one assist in the league, Oh raised his official season tally to three goals and three assists.
Cho got on the scoresheet in the Europa Conference League (UECL). Starting in the first match of the 2026-2027 UECL league phase against Egnatia at Elbasan Arena in Albania on the same day, Cho leveled the score in the 33rd minute with a header from a right-side cross by Rasmus Kristensen, after his team had fallen behind 0-1. The match ended 1-1 with no further goals, leaving Cho with four goals and one assist in official competition this season.
