Jony the Hairdresser, whose legal name is John Mokuna Mungai, made the admission during an interview with media personality Kwambox on Thursday, October 22.
When the topic of public washrooms came up, Jony was candid about his choice, saying his appearance simply does not register as male to most people around him.

"The ladies. Because I speak for myself, I pass as a lady more than a guy. And that is why I have witnessed. I pass as a lady because of the dressing. I don't have a lot of facial hair; my voice is not that deep," he said.
The hair and makeup artist also revealed a personal safety measure he takes at entertainment venues. Before entering a club, he makes a point of identifying himself to bouncers and staff as a biological male.
"So what I do when I go to a club, I make sure the bouncers and the staff get to know who I am first, ndo just in case kuna issue at least niko na watu wanajua," he explained.
The following day, content creator Kelvin Kinuthia, widely known for his comedic character "Mama Shiko" and his feminine presentation, responded to the growing chatter on social media.
In a post dated Friday, October 23, Kinuthia wrote:
"At least now we can breathe yes we use the ladies washroom. The question is answered."
His comment suggested the subject had long been a topic of curiosity among his followers.
The interview footage spread rapidly across TikTok and Instagram, drawing sharply divided reactions.
Some Kenyans expressed understanding for the cross-dressers' position, while others raised concerns about privacy and the safety of women in gender-separated facilities.
TikToker Rakel put forward a practical suggestion amid the debate.
"Probably the government should do something and have four sets of toilets. We have the ladies' ones, the gents' and then these other people who identify themselves differently," she said, arguing that existing infrastructure simply does not account for gender-nonconforming individuals.
The conversation continues to generate strong opinions online, touching on broader questions of gender expression, personal safety, and how public spaces are designed to accommodate all Kenyans.
