Over 8,000 endangered golden-crowned flying foxes recorded in Aurora

More than 8,000 golden-crowned flying foxes, an endangered species of fruit bat, were observed in a roosting site in Aurora Memorial National Park (AMNP), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Central Luzon said.

The bats were observed during DENR’s monitoring activity. This was the second time that such fruit bat species were observed at the roosting site, the department said.

“Protecting the roosting sites and feeding habitats of this fruit bat species is essential to sustaining ecological functions and maintaining the health of Aurora’s vast forest ecosystems,” said DENR Maria Aurora community head Marivic Santos in a statement.

The golden-crowned flying foxes are classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

Following the sighting of the bats, the DENR called for sustained wildlife monitoring and habitat protection.

“We continuously encourage all government agencies, volunteer groups, and communities to join us in our biodiversity conservation efforts. Let us work together to protect the rich biodiversity and natural habitats of Central Luzon through collective action and shared responsibility, ensuring the preservation of our natural heritage for future generations,” said DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA News
