Homeland Security Director Markwayne Mullin on Sunday ripped Gov. Kathy Hochul for grandstanding over the shooting of a reputed gangbanger by ICE just days after she said nothing about an NYPD cop being stabbed by other illegal immigrants.
Mullin accused Hochul of “hypocrisy” for the way she suggested it was federal agents terrorizing the Empire State because Oscar Belgal was left with non-life-threatening wounds while trying to flee his arrest in the Bronx on Thursday.
Neither Hochul nor other leading “career sanctuary politicians” said “anything when … an NYPD officer was stabbed seven times in this same neighborhood in the Bronx just last week,” Mullin noted on Fox News’ Shannon Bream Sunday, referring to off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes.
“They were completely silent,” he raged.
Mullins noted the striking similarities between the suspects in Mercedes’ stabbing, Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo and Sneider Mejia Bautista, and the shot migrant being championed by the left
“All three of these criminals … all from the Dominican Republic, all had extensive criminal records, all should have been deported” with previous containers, he said.
“When an NYPD officer got stabbed, no one did a press conference, no one was outside protesting, no one said a word,” Mullin said.
“And then when Oscar, an individual who evaded us last month and has an extensive criminal background,” he said, reading a list of his felony charges and his gang affiliation, “they’re out there protesting for this guy?
“It’s absolute hypocrisy.”
He added that Belga had built up an astonishing number of charges in the three years since he arrived illegally in the United States, including four counts of felony robbery, two of felony assault, two felony drug charges, and two felony larceny charges, as well as misdemeanor assault and weapons possession.
He added that ICE was in New York to “do a job,” after Hochul demanded that its agents stay out of the city.
“Who is going to get criminals off the streets that you keep releasing?” Mullin asked.
Hochul had accused ICE of the “intentional infliction of pain, of chaos, [and] of trying to terrorize neighborhoods” after agents fired into a vehicle containing a 5-year-old child during a targeted operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx this week.
Her office on Sunday dismissed criticism of her failing to address the Oct. 2 attack on Det. Mercedes, who has since left the hospital.
“Governor Hochul has tremendous respect for the hardworking men and women of the New York City Police Department and the crucial role they play in driving down crime and making New York safer,” a spokesperson for Hochul’s office told The Post.
“Rather than politicizing this terrible incident, the Governor will continue to prioritize the real work that supports our law enforcement, including investing record amounts in law enforcement funding, strengthening laws to keep our communities safe, and protecting New Yorkers from rogue ICE agents.”
