When Sylvester Stallone’s infant daughter, Sophia Rose Stallone, underwent surgery for a congenital heart defect in November 1996, the experience brought the actor face to face with the challenges families endure when their children need specialised medical care.
Sophia was diagnosed with a hole in her heart, which doctors at UCLA Medical Center successfully corrected. In January 1998, Stallone channelled that personal experience into a charitable effort, donating $200,000 to the Heart of a Child Foundation to support research into congenital heart defects. Part of the money came from sales of T-shirts he designed for Planet Hollywood, the restaurant chain he co-owned.
His contribution helped support an organisation established by families who wanted to advance research and improve treatment for children with heart conditions.
Sophia Stallone’s in 1996
Sophia Rose Stallone, the eldest daughter of Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin, was born on August 27, 1996. Doctors discovered that she had a congenital heart defect described in contemporary reports as a hole in her heart. In November 1996, Sophia underwent surgery at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The procedure was performed by Dr Hillel Laks, then chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the hospital. The operation was successful, and Sophia recovered. The experience gave Stallone a personal connection to families whose children require specialised cardiac treatment. His daughter’s recovery subsequently motivated him to support research into congenital heart defects and help improve the prospects of other young patients.
Stallone donated $200,000 to the Heart of a Child Foundation
In January 1998, Stallone presented a $200,000 cheque to the Heart of a Child Foundation at Planet Hollywood in Beverly Hills. Dr Laks accepted the cheque on behalf of the organisation. The foundation was established in 1997 by families who had experienced the loss of children to congenital heart defects. They wanted to support research into the causes of these conditions and help advance treatment for affected children.Jeffrey Bronchick, one of the founders, told the Los Angeles Times in January 1998 that the families had struggled to find an organisation specifically dedicated to research into congenital heart defects. The foundation was created to address that need by directing funding towards medical research.Stallone’s donation supported this mission, drawing on the experience of his daughter’s successful treatment to help advance a cause affecting thousands of families.
How T-shirt sales helped raise the money
Stallone helped generate funds for the contribution by designing special T-shirts sold exclusively through Planet Hollywood restaurants. Proceeds from the sales contributed to the $200,000 donation. The initiative combined his creative work with his involvement in the restaurant business. Planet Hollywood, known for its entertainment-themed restaurants and celebrity connections, provided a platform for selling the merchandise and raising money for paediatric heart research. The fundraising effort gave customers an opportunity to contribute to the cause while purchasing merchandise associated with the actor. It also demonstrated how Stallone used his commercial ventures to support a charitable organisation focused on children’s health.
The foundation’s mission to help children with heart defects
The Heart of a Child Foundation was established to support research into congenital heart defects, which develop before birth and can affect the structure or functioning of the heart. Some of these conditions require surgery or other medical interventions during infancy. Research into their causes, along with improvements in diagnosis and treatment, is important for helping affected children receive appropriate care. The foundation’s founders brought personal experience to the effort, having faced the loss of children to congenital heart conditions. Their goal was to direct resources towards research and improve the treatment available to other families.Stallone’s contribution supported the organisation during its early years, when its founders were working to establish a dedicated source of funding for paediatric cardiac research.
Stallone and Jennifer Flavin supported a later fundraiser
Stallone and his wife, Jennifer Flavin Stallone, continued their involvement with the foundation after the 1998 donation. In May 1999, the couple participated in a fashion-show fundraiser at a St John boutique in Beverly Hills.
Reported by the Los Angeles Times in June that year, the event attracted more than 150 people and raised over $10,000 for the Heart of a Child Foundation.Flavin Stallone modelled clothing alongside Deanna Martin, the daughter of entertainer Dean Martin. The event brought together fashion and fundraising to support the foundation’s work on congenital heart defects.
Turning a family experience into support for others
Sophia’s recovery after heart surgery became a turning point in Stallone’s charitable involvement with paediatric heart health.
His $200,000 donation helped support a foundation created by families seeking better research and treatment for children with congenital heart defects. The contribution also brought together his personal experience and his work with Planet Hollywood, with T-shirt sales helping raise funds for the cause. The subsequent fundraiser involving Stallone and Flavin extended their support beyond the original cheque presentation.
