Iran’s 700km Ship-Killer Missile Raises Stakes for Naval Forces Across the Gulf

Displayed during Iran’s Holy Defense Week in Tehran on September 29, the missile was shown on a mobile launcher alongside other military systems. The exhibition underscores Tehran’s continued emphasis on mobile missile forces as a means of deterring stronger adversaries and complicating naval operations near its coastline.

The Zolfaghar-Basir is an anti-ship variant of Iran’s Zolfaghar ballistic missile, part of the broader Fateh family. Its reported range is approximately 700 kilometres, potentially placing vessels operating across significant portions of the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters within reach, depending on launch location and the target’s position.

Its defining feature is an electro-optical seeker intended to help guide the missile toward its target during the final phase of flight. In principle, this could improve its ability to engage ships compared with a ballistic missile relying solely on pre-programmed coordinates. However, successfully striking a moving warship requires reliable target tracking, timely targeting data and the ability to overcome electronic warfare and ship-based defensive systems.

The mobile launcher adds another dimension to the threat. Road-mobile systems can relocate between firing positions, making them more difficult to locate and destroy before launch than permanently fixed installations. Displaying two missiles on a launcher also signals an emphasis on mobility and launch capacity, although the exhibit alone does not establish the system’s operational readiness or actual firing rate.

For naval forces operating in the Gulf, the concern is not simply the missile’s advertised range. It is the possibility that ballistic missiles, drones and other coastal weapons could be combined to pressure ships, complicate defensive planning and raise the risks of operating near critical maritime routes.

Iran’s display is a demonstration of capability, not proof that the missile can reliably defeat modern naval defences. Its real battlefield effectiveness will depend on targeting networks, accuracy, launch survivability and performance under combat conditions.
