The financial incentive is designed to encourage experienced service members to remain in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) rather than leave for employment opportunities in the private sector.
The scheme also includes eligible foreign nationals serving in the ADF, provided they meet the government's conditions for receiving the payment.
Australia lists 3 conditions for the KSh 6.45 million bonus
According to the published details, military personnel must meet three conditions to qualify for the retention bonus.
1. Serve in a designated critical role
Applicants must be current members of the Australian Defence Force serving in a role identified as critical. The bonus is not automatically available to every soldier in the military.
2. Commit to additional military service
Eligible personnel must agree to remain in the defence force for an agreed period beyond their existing service obligation. The incentive is intended to encourage experienced personnel to continue serving.
3. Have no administrative or disciplinary action
Applicants must not be subject to administrative or disciplinary action when they submit their application for the bonus.
Foreign nationals serving in the ADF must satisfy the same three conditions to qualify for the payment.
Foreign soldiers can also qualify for the bonus
Australia has recruited citizens of countries including New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States for specific roles in its defence forces.
Under the retention scheme, eligible foreign nationals already serving in the ADF can receive the bonus if they meet the stated requirements.
However, the offer does not mean that every foreign national can enlist in the Australian military or automatically qualify for the payment. Applicants must already be serving in an eligible position and meet the conditions attached to the incentive.
For Kenyans and other African nationals interested in military opportunities abroad, it is important to distinguish between eligibility to join a foreign military and eligibility for a retention bonus offered to existing service members.
