Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has revealed how the club’s former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, would have reacted to defender Lisandro Martinez’s explosive comments about the Red Devils’ hierarchy.
Martinez had criticised Man United’s board for failing to invest in signing players who could help the team during the summer transfer window.
The Argentina international made the comments after Man United were defeated 2-0 by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Reacting on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand insisted that Ferguson would have punished Martinez with a fine.
“If that happened in our time, I think about what it would be like in my situation. Was I ever in a situation where I called out the club?
“The manager [Alex Ferguson] made a substitution against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
“I thought it was the wrong substitution, and I was going crazy on the pitch and in the changing room. The manager completely shut me down.
“When I tried to apologise to him, he did not accept it. He still hammered me and fined me, but it is a bit different.
“I did not come out in the media and personally get at anybody. But he made me know where my place was and not to do that again.”
