New York City, historically a stronghold for genres like hip-hop, salsa, and jazz, is experiencing a new cultural phenomenon: the surge of Mexican music driven by a demographic often referred to as “Pueblo York.” This term describes the Mexican population residing in the city, of which an estimated 60% to 80% hails from the state of Puebla.
With more than 500,000 Mexicans living in the metropolitan area—with estimates reaching up to 800,000—this musical movement has become an urban force comparable to the concept of “Nuyoricans.” In January 2026, Billboard magazine identified East Coast Mexican music as one of the key trends set to dominate the Latin music scene.
In neighborhoods like the Bronx and Queens, artists and groups are fusing traditional genres with modern urban sounds. DJ HelloTones blends cumbia sonidera with hip-hop, while the band Santy y Su Estilo Único specializes in corridos tumbados with releases like Straight Outta NYC and Mercadito (live).
The diversity of styles includes Colombian cumbia, rebajada, 420, and villera, alongside projects from artists like rapper SpliffHappy, who merges hip-hop with Mexican rhythms in tracks such as “Brooklyn.”
The movement is also bolstered by figures like concert organizer Paulina Montiel (Migo Events) and podcaster Moisés Ceja López (Onda Regional Show), who promote regional Mexican music throughout New York. Additionally, the female mariachi group Flor de Toloache, founded in 2008, has achieved international acclaim, notably winning a Latin Grammy in 2017.
Singer Selines, born in the Bronx, contributes a folk style infused with jazz and bolero influences, demonstrating the wide array of genres that define the identity of “Pueblo York.”
