The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has entered into a strategic academic partnership with Japan’s Mie University to strengthen international collaboration in higher education and research, with a particular focus on semiconductors and digital technologies. According to an official release issued by IIT Hyderabad, the two institutions signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) at the IIT Hyderabad campus to establish a framework for academic cooperation, knowledge sharing and student exchange programmes.
The partnership is governed by two separate agreements designed to facilitate academic engagement and mobility between the institutions. The Agreement on Academic Cooperation and Exchange outlines a broad range of collaborative activities, including exchanges involving faculty members and staff, student mobility programmes, the exchange of academic and educational information, joint research projects, lectures and symposia. The agreement also allows both institutions to undertake additional academic initiatives that they mutually approve, creating scope for expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest.
A separate Student Exchange MoU establishes arrangements for students from the two universities to study at the partner institution for one or two consecutive academic semesters.
A key objective of the collaboration is to contribute to the development of the semiconductor ecosystem in India and Japan. The institutions aim to bring their respective academic capabilities together to support emerging technological requirements and prepare students and young researchers for opportunities in an increasingly interconnected global technology sector.
The partnership could also facilitate closer engagement between IIT Hyderabad and semiconductor companies and organisations operating in Mie Prefecture.
Professor Hideto Miyake, Professor and Assistant to the President of Mie University and Head of the Semiconductor Division of the Innovation Centre for Semiconductor and Digital Future, welcomed the agreement and expressed his interest in expanding cooperation between the two institutions. He highlighted student and faculty exchanges, joint research and academic activities as important areas through which the partnership could develop, particularly in the semiconductor sector.
IIT Hyderabad Director Professor BS Murty also expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that he looked forward to developing a productive and enduring relationship with Mie University. He noted that the MoUs establish a meaningful framework through which students, faculty members and researchers from both institutions can collaborate through exchange programmes, joint research and other academic activities.
