The New York Giants have had a revolving door at the quarterback position this season. Jaxson Dart opened the season as the starter, but lost his season to a brutal knee injury. A veteran journeyman was inserted into the roll to replace Dart, but after he struggled with interceptions, a common theme throughout his career, the Giants traded with the Minnesota Vikings to acquire J.J. McCarthy, who never lived up to expectations in Minnesota.
McCarthy got his first opportunity in New York when head coach John Harbaugh had seen enough of Winston against the Saints and pulled the veteran. McCarthy and the Giants fell short of what would’ve been nothing short of a miraculous comeback, but McCarthy was nonetheless impressive, throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown in just the fourth quarter.
On Wednesday, the Giants officially announced McCarthy would start Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, a decision Winston spoke with reporters about.
“Last game it wasn’t what it was capable of being,” Winston said.
Jameis Winston is asked if he feels in any way that he was playing well enough to not get benched:
“Every single week, you’re defined off of the last time you stepped foot on the field. Last game, my job is to lead the New York Football Giants to a win, and that didn’t happen.” https://t.co/PQwIYRwtkv

“Every single week, you’re defined off of the last time you stepped foot on the field. So I believe based off last game, my job is to lead the New York Football Giants to a win, and that didn’t happen. That being said, I understand where I am now.”
Winston has spent the majority of his last seven seasons in the league as a backup, so it’s a role he’s familiar with.
“Just focusing on one day at a time,” he said. “I’m extremely grateful that I still get to do what I love, and that’s play football at a high level for the New York Football Giants. Being able to accept roles and understand like, ‘What is your significant role? How can I be the best at my role with this team?’ is one of the things you have to adjust to in this league.”
