Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to attend the funeral of Ifeanyi Nwolie, a supporter shot dead during a political gathering.
Nwolie was killed following violence that erupted at an NDC political event in Enugu State on October 10, 2026.
He was laid to rest in his hometown of Afa, located in the Udi Local Government Area.
Following the burial, Obi visited the bereaved mother at her residence to offer his condolences.
The former governor pledged to step into the role of her late son by providing financial support, immediately sending a 15-month stipend covering her living expenses through December 2027—the full amount her late son would regularly send her.
“My humble pledge to the mother is that God Almighty, whom it pleased to bring Ifeanyi home, has also given her another son in me to support her, as Ifeanyi used to,” Obi said.
Reflecting on the tragic incident in a statement released via his official X handle, Obi condemned the country’s hostile political climate and urged politicians across all parties to prioritize human life over political ambitions as the 2027 general elections approach.
“Today, I arrived at Abuja Airport from the United Kingdom at 5:30 a.m. and immediately connected to the 7 a.m. flight to Enugu to attend the funeral of late Ifeanyi Nwolie,” Obi stated. “His death is a painful reminder of the devastating human cost of our nation’s current toxic political environment.”
Obi made a direct appeal to political actors at all levels of government to shun ethnic division, religious bigotry, and electoral violence.
“Democracy thrives when citizens can freely express their political choices and participate in the electoral process without fear. The process through which we attain public office is more important than the office itself,” he emphasised. “We must work together to rebuild and restore a Nigeria where human life is valued above political ambition.”
