Deion Sanders Sends Prayers for Eagles QB Jalen Hurts After Diagnosis

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is facing a serious medical setback, prompting a heartfelt reaction from Colorado head coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders.

After medical evaluations throughout this month, Hurts was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both of his lungs. Hurts last played on Oct. 11 in a loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London and was ruled out of this past Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

According to The Athletic, a league source said on Tuesday that the NFL determined the Eagles appropriately handled the medical process of clearing Hurts to play against Jacksonville earlier this month. The league will not discipline the Eagles over their handling of the situation, according to the report.

During a Colorado football media session on Tuesday, Sanders expressed concern about the seriousness of Hurts' diagnosis and what it could mean for his NFL career.

"I know what he's dealing with, I know what he's going through, and I'm praying for him," Sanders said. "And I pray to God that it's not what I think, it's not what many of us think but when we see he's out for the season, I'm just like please, I pray to God that he's not out for the rest of his career."

"Hats off to his family and the people around him. I know he's a praying man. He had a tremendous family. He was raised correctly ... a tremendous support system, but hats off to him," Sanders shared.

Sanders, 59, underwent multiple surgeries in 2021 and ultimately had two toes on his left foot amputated following medical complications involving blood clots from a previous surgery. Last year, Sanders underwent surgery to remove his bladder following a cancer diagnosis, and he has been cancer-free since.

Coach Prime is in his fourth season coaching Colorado after previously serving as the head coach of Jackson State. He played from 1989 to 2005 in the NFL, winning two Super Bowl championships and becoming an inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Sanders' own experiences with blood clots give his concern about Hurts' health added significance. Hurts' initial diagnosis was superficial vein thrombosis ahead of the Eagles' Oct. 10 game against the Jaguars in London. Subsequent evaluations revealed deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli.

The Eagles are currently 2-4 and relying on backup Tanner McKee in a season in which their star running back Saquon Barkley is currently sidelined due to injury. They'll face the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, Oct. 26, for "Monday Night Football."
