The former Rangers ace is set to gain a new job within football - at the expense of an ex Celtic player.
Duncan Ferguson is reportedly set to become the new manager of Glentoran in a shock return to football.
The former Everton, Rangers and Scotland striker has been out of the dugout for two years following his spell with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. He’d managed Forest Green Rovers in England before that and was also part of Everton’s coaching staff under the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before going solo.
Celtic cult hero Paddy McCourt has been Glentoran’s interim manager after Declan Devine’s sacking last month. Glens are unbeaten in their last four league under the former Celtic playmaker but suffered a midweek County Antrim Shield quarter-final loss versus Cliftonville.
Who will become the new manager of Glentoran?
Ferguson has worked as a pundit since leaving the Highlands, most recently forming part of ITV’s coverage at the World Cup as Scotland returned to the major tournament for the first time since 1998, but reportedly threw his hat in the Glentoran ring this week.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, The Oval-based club will not turn to their former Celtic player currently steering the ship, with Ferguson ‘set’ to be appointed in ‘what will be the most extraordinary appointment in the history of Irish League football.’ Limavady United come to Glentoran on Saturday afternoon in the club’s latest NIFL Premiership match.
The 54-year-old said recently of his desire for a managerial return: “I want to get back into management. “I’ve made a couple of crazy decisions in my career in management, but that’s because I was desperate to get in.
“When you’re working every minute of the day as a coach, and you work for Everton and you’re in there 24/7, when you leave and you’re out to football for a week or a month – you think it’s a year because you’ve been working every day.

“It feels like a month’s a year and I went in too quickly and I took the wrong job, especially the first one. I took the wrong job. I should never have taken it. I didn’t even know where they were in the league. And then my last job, Inverness went into administration. So how’s your luck? I think I’ve got a lot to offer. I look back and I think I should give myself a good shake. Hopefully an opportunity will come along soon because I know I’ve got so much to offer.”
