Avelo Airlines Cancels All Flights To 9 Destinations: See Full List Now

Avelo Airlines is withdrawing from nine airports over the course of 2026 as it continues the sweeping restructuring of its route network. The changes include the elimination of several domestic and international destinations, the end of flights from Houston Hobby Airport (HOU), and the planned withdrawal from Jacksonville and Knoxville in November.

However, the cuts are only one part of a broader strategy. Avelo is concentrating its operations around four established bases, with a fifth preparing to open in the Dallas metroplex. A further analysis of US Department Of Transportation (DOT) data shows that load factors have improved significantly at all four established bases since the changes were first put into place, suggesting that the airline's efforts to streamline its network are beginning to show promise.

Avelo Is Ending Flights To Nine Destinations

Avelo's latest network changes will leave nine airports without service from the airline by the end of November. The earliest withdrawals occurred in January, including Hartford, Washington Dulles, Manchester, and three Caribbean and Mexican destinations. Houston Hobby lost its Avelo service in September, while Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) are scheduled to follow in November. The cuts represent the latest stage of an ongoing reshaping of Avelo's route network, as the carrier shifts aircraft and resources toward its most strategically important markets.

The Houston withdrawal is notable because Avelo is not abandoning the metropolitan area altogether. Instead, it is moving its New Haven–Houston service to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), replacing Hobby with a larger airport serving the northern and eastern parts of the region. The move illustrates how the airline is reassessing individual airports, rather than necessarily exiting entire cities. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville and Knoxville withdrawals will further reduce the number of destinations served from Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN), even as that airport remains Avelo's largest operating base.

The broader explanation dates to Avelo's January 2026 restructuring announcement, which outlined plans to close operating bases at Raleigh-Durham, Wilmington in North Carolina, and Mesa in Arizona. The airline also planned to remove six Boeing 737-700 aircraft while increasingly relying on its larger Boeing 737-800s, with its future Embraer E195-E2 fleet providing another opportunity to reshape capacity. The objective was to simplify operations, reduce costs, and concentrate flying at airports where Avelo believed it had stronger long-term prospects.

Avelo's Core Bases Are Already Showing Signs Of Improvement

Avelo's restructuring has left it focused on four established bases: New Haven (HVN), Wilmington, Delaware (ILG), Concord (USA), and Lakeland (LAL). Each offers access to a substantial metropolitan market while avoiding direct competition at the largest airport in that market. Wilmington serves the Philadelphia region, Concord provides an alternative to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), and Lakeland sits between Orlando and Tampa.

The airline is therefore prioritizing smaller airports where it believes it can operate more efficiently and establish a distinctive market position. Early indications suggest that the strategy is showing promise. Analysis of US DOT T-100 data reveals that load factors improved at all four of these bases in the first half of 2026 when compared with the equivalent period in 2025.

Concord recorded the largest improvement, climbing 10.2 percentage points to 74.1%, followed by Wilmington, up 7.1 points to 79.6%. New Haven remained the largest base, with 93 weekly departures scheduled for the winter schedule, and it too is approaching 80% full flights. By comparison, load factors at the former bases at Raleigh-Durham and Wilmington, North Carolina fell to 69.5% and 63.7%, respectively. This appears to vindicate Avelo's January restructuring decision, although it should be noted that load factors alone do not establish profitability.

The underlying route data also highlights the importance of Florida and Puerto Rico to Avelo's network. New Haven–Orlando and Lakeland–San Juan were both top performers with load factors of 85.4%, while Concord–San Juan reached 84.9% and Wilmington–Fort Myers recorded 83.5%. However, some routes continue to struggle, notably Lakeland–Atlanta at just 47.7%, Concord–Albany at 65.4%, and New Haven–Baltimore at 63.9%.

These differences underline why the airline continues to adjust individual routes, even at its successful bases. But with the four established bases showing improved occupancy, attention now turns to whether Avelo can reproduce that performance at its fifth base, a brand new commercial airport in Texas.

Avelo's New McKinney Base Is Preparing For Its First Flights

Avelo's fifth base will open at McKinney National Airport (DTX), approximately 30 miles (48 km) north of downtown Dallas, on November 11. The airline initially announced five routes from the airport in June, added four more in September, and revealed another two Florida destinations on October 15. This means that by mid-December, Avelo now plans to serve 11 destinations from McKinney, supported by three based Boeing 737-800 aircraft and approximately 150 new jobs.

McKinney aims to provide a more convenient alternative for residents of the rapidly growing northern Dallas suburbs, who would otherwise have to travel to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) or Dallas Love Field (DAL). The airport has been undergoing a transformation from a general aviation facility to a commercial airport with a new 46,000-square-foot passenger terminal, with the FAA issuing its operating certificate in September.

Passengers can expect four boarding gates (expandable to six), spacious waiting areas, food and beverage concessions, onsite rental cars, and a 980-space parking lot directly outside the terminal. The airport is designed to handle approximately 200,000 passengers annually in its initial iteration, although the site itself has huge tracts of land that could be expanded upon if the airport proves to deliver on the pent-up demand in North Dallas.

McKinney's 38 peak weekly departures will make it Avelo's third-busiest airport, ahead of Lakeland and Concord. However, McKinney will face a different challenge from Avelo's other bases: starting from scratch, and attracting passengers in a metropolitan area long-dominated by American Airlines at DFW and Southwest Airlines at DAL. Its success will depend on whether the convenience of a smaller airport, competitive fares, and nonstop flights to popular destinations can attract sufficient demand. After a year of restructuring and network reductions, McKinney represents Avelo's next major test of its smaller-airport strategy.
