Police in Ghana’s Bono Region have arrested eight suspects after a 21-year-old man was beaten during an alleged internet fraud initiation, described by Graphic Online as “sakawa”. The Bono Regional Police Command issued a statement dated Friday 9 October 2026, five days after the attack on Sunday 4 October.
What We Know
The case matters to readers in the United States because police say the suspects posed online as soldiers to collect money from people they chatted with. That is a tactic any online user, including Americans, could meet.
Godstime Umukoro, 21, was beaten on Sunday 4 October 2026 at about 4:30 pm in Kotokrom, in the Sunyani West Municipality of Bono Region. Police answered a distress call and found him with multiple marks of assault on his body.
Police arrested eight suspects aged 18 to 30 in connection with the attack. They say the alleged leader, known as the “chairman”, is Nwachukwu King Augustine.
According to the police statement, the suspects told investigators they beat Mr Umukoro severely as part of his initiation into the internet fraud operation. They also said they had undergone a similar process themselves.
Police describe the alleged scam method in some detail. They say the suspects downloaded images of foreign military personnel and posed as soldiers on the front lines in Yemen.
The suspects then chatted with victims online and collected money sent to the leader’s account, according to police. Graphic Online describes the initiation as part of “sakawa”, a Ghanaian term for internet fraud.
Police commended members of the public for their swift intervention. They urged continued cooperation with officers.
All eight are suspects, and the police statement does not mention any court ruling. They remain presumed innocent until a court decides.
What Is Not Known
Several basic questions remain open in this case. The reports do not describe Mr Umukoro’s present condition, and hospital treatment was not reported.
Police have not said what charges the eight suspects will face. No court dates have been reported either.
It is also unknown how many people the scheme defrauded or how much money was collected. The reports do not say where the victims lived, so it is unclear whether any were in the United States.
The suspects told police they had gone through a similar process themselves, and no further detail was given. These accounts come from the police statement and have not been tested in court.
No named police official was quoted in the published reports. The statement came from the Bono Regional Police Command.
The reports also do not say whether other people were involved beyond the eight arrested. Further arrests or charges, if any, would be for police and prosecutors to announce.
We will update this report if police or the courts release more information. Until then, the facts above are limited to what the police statement and the two news reports contain.
What It Means for US Readers
The case is local, but the fraud method police describe is one any online user could meet. The reports do not say where the victims lived.
Readers should be careful with anyone met online who claims to be deployed overseas and asks for money. Requests to send money to a third party’s account deserve particular caution.
Fraud of this kind relies on trust built through online conversation. A person who claims to serve in a conflict zone and cannot be verified independently should be treated with caution.
Nothing in the reports suggests that any US resident was a victim in this case. No such link has been reported.
Nothing in the reports points to a risk for visitors to Bono Region. Travellers can still check their own government’s travel guidance before a trip.
