Jalen Hurts’ health is the only thing that matters right now. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, and the team expects him to make a full recovery. Still, his absence also leaves Philadelphia facing an uncomfortable reality: This season could be the opportunity the franchise needs to make a change at head coach.
The Eagles are 2-4, riding a four-game losing streak, and their offense has looked completely lost for stretches of the young season. The defense has its own problems, but the recurring offensive dysfunction is becoming impossible to ignore.
Nick Sirianni has delivered tremendous highs in Philadelphia, including a Super Bowl championship. However, the Eagles have repeatedly struggled to establish a consistent offensive identity. If Hurts’ absence exposes those issues even further, ownership should use the offseason to move in a different direction.
The Offensive Coordinator Carousel Is Unsustainable
Sirianni’s biggest problem might be the structure he has created around himself.
Philadelphia has cycled through offensive coordinators at an alarming rate. Shane Steichen left after the 2022 season to become the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach. Brian Johnson followed, then Kellen Moore arrived and helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl before leaving to become the New Orleans Saints’ head coach. Now Sean Mannion is tasked with getting the offense back on track.
Every new coordinator brings a different philosophy, terminology, and approach. Quarterbacks and receivers must adjust, the offensive line must learn new concepts, and the entire unit needs time to build chemistry.
That instability is especially damaging in an NFL increasingly defined by offensive innovation and continuity. Sirianni’s supporters can point to the Super Bowl trophy and argue that his approach works. That’s fair, but a successful head coach should build a structure that survives staff turnover, rather than repeatedly starting over whenever an assistant gets a better opportunity.
Sirianni also occupies an awkward middle ground. He delegates play-calling but remains heavily involved in shaping the offense. If the offense struggles, it’s difficult to determine where the coordinator’s responsibility ends, and the head coach’s begins.
Philadelphia needs a clear offensive identity and a head coach who can establish it.
This Is an Opportunity to Start Fresh
The Eagles shouldn’t blow up their roster. They still have the foundation of a championship team.
Hurts remains their franchise quarterback. DeVonta Smith is an established playmaker, while Jalen Carter, Cooper DeJean, and Quinyon Mitchell give Philadelphia promising young talent to build around.
The problem isn’t a lack of talent. It’s whether the current coaching structure can consistently maximize it.
Philadelphia’s recent collapses have been particularly concerning. The offense has struggled to score after halftime, and the losses to Chicago, Jacksonville, and Los Angeles exposed a team that too often looks incapable of adjusting when things go wrong.
Injuries have unquestionably played a role. Lane Johnson’s retirement, Cam Jurgens’ departure, injuries to Landon Dickerson and Saquon Barkley, and DeVonta Smith’s absences have made life difficult. Hurts’ diagnosis only adds to the adversity.
But injuries don’t explain every schematic problem or every second-half collapse. And if the Eagles finish with a losing record, ownership will have to decide whether the current direction is worth another season.
Don’t Let a Respectable Finish Cloud the Decision
The biggest danger for Philadelphia is finishing just well enough to avoid making a difficult decision.
Tanner McKee could keep the offense competitive. The defense could win games, and the NFC East could provide a path to the playoffs. If the Eagles scrape together a respectable finish, the pressure to retain Sirianni will grow.
But a few wins wouldn’t erase the larger issues. Philadelphia needs to evaluate the season honestly, determine whether Sirianni is the right person to lead its next championship push, and make a decision based on the long-term outlook rather than the final win total.
If the answer is no, the offseason is the time to move on. A coaching change would give the Eagles an opportunity to hire an offensive-minded head coach with a clear vision, build continuity around Hurts, and use their draft capital to address an aging and increasingly injury-prone roster.
The Eagles don’t need to start from scratch. They need to stop repeating the same cycle.
Jalen Hurts’ injury is a serious setback, and nobody should pretend otherwise. But if this season finally forces Philadelphia to confront its coaching problem, the organization could emerge better positioned for the future.
The championship window isn’t necessarily closed. It might simply be time for someone new to lead it.
