Commenting on the amendment to the Child Protection Act of 2021, Prime Minister Péter Magyar of Hungary has stated that LGBTQ rights were not addressed in the legislation and that the release of €4.2 billion in EU funding was a separate matter, the Hungarian cable news channel HírTV reports.
While the amendment does not explicitly refer to LGBTQ rights, it removes earlier prohibitions that specifically mandated a prohibition on promoting homosexuality and gender reassignment in public schools.
Meanwhile, a pro-LGBTQ civil organiziation has already held an awareness-raising session at Újpetrei Primary School in Újpetre, Hungary. The incident has once again brought the issue of parental rights into the spotlight.
The EU funding timeline does not support the claim that the €4.2 billion was released as a result of Tuesday’s parliamentary vote, HírTV points out.. The European Commission had already proposed the release on 23 September, citing reforms to public procurement and anti-corruption measures.
However, funds remained frozen under a separate procedure due to concerns related to LGBTIQ rights and child protection.
The publicly available description of the programme at Újpetre Primary School refers to career guidance and gender roles. It does not establish that students were taught about gender transition or homosexuality.
