Every year on 14 October, World Standards Day provides an opportunity to recognize the vital contribution of standards to economic development, public safety, technological progress, environmental sustainability and the well-being of societies. The theme of World Standards Day 2026, “Shared vision for a better world: Spotlight on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy,” draws attention to one of the most fundamental requirements of modern life: ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
Energy is no longer simply a question of producing electricity. It is directly connected with industrial productivity, agriculture, transportation, healthcare, communications, digital services and the overall competitiveness of a national economy. As countries move towards renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, smart systems and digital infrastructure, the importance of standards and conformity assessment has never been greater. For Pakistan, this distinction is particularly important as economy is witnessing increasing deployment of solar photovoltaic systems, batteries, energy-efficient appliances, electrical equipment, electric mobility solutions and other technologies associated with the transition towards cleaner energy.
Pakistan Standards establish the technical requirements that define what constitutes an acceptable level of quality, safety, efficiency and performance. However, Pakistan Standard achieves its real purpose only when there are credible mechanisms to determine whether products, processes and services actually conform to those requirements. This is where conformity assessment through testing, inspection, certification and related activities, plays a decisive role.
Consumers should not have to determine the technical quality of a product merely by examining its appearance, price or marketing claims. The Conformity assessment provides confidence. It gives regulators, industry and consumers an objective basis for determining whether products and services meet specified requirements.
The transition towards clean energy must be accompanied by a corresponding transition towards quality-assured clean energy technologies. For example, solar panels, inverters, batteries, electrical cables, switches, protection equipment and other components of renewable-energy systems must perform safely under actual operating conditions. Poor-quality or non-conforming equipment can result not only in financial losses but also in electrical hazards, reduced energy efficiency, premature system failure and risks to human life and property.
Therefore, conformity assessment should not be regarded merely as a regulatory formality. It is an essential component of consumer protection, industrial development and sustainable energy policy. At the same time, Pakistan needs robust domestic conformity-assessment mechanisms. Testing laboratories must have appropriate technical competence and infrastructure; inspection activities must be credible and impartial; certification systems must inspire confidence; and regulatory enforcement must be consistent and transparent.
The objective should be to establish a complete quality chain:
Standard → Testing → Inspection → Certification → Market Surveillance → Consumer Confidence.
If any link in this chain is weak, the effectiveness of the entire system can be compromised. The relevance of this approach becomes even clearer when we consider the growing relationship between energy and digital technology. Modern energy systems are increasingly connected through sensors, communication networks, automation, software, cloud platforms and data-driven technologies. Smart meters, smart grids, energy-management systems, electric-vehicle charging infrastructure and digitally controlled energy systems are examples of this convergence.
Consequently, the future of conformity assessment cannot remain limited to traditional physical product inspection. It must increasingly consider digital functionality, interoperability, cybersecurity, data integrity, software-dependent performance and system-level safety, wherever these factors are relevant to the applicable standards.
The 2026 World Standards Day theme recognizes precisely this interconnected future. International standards help energy systems become safer and more efficient while supporting their integration with the digital and communication technologies that underpin modern society.
In other words, quality is not necessarily an additional cost; poor quality is often the greater cost. For Pakistan’s consumers, this message is especially relevant. A low-cost product that consumes excessive energy, fails prematurely or creates safety risks may ultimately be much more expensive than a properly tested and certified product. Effective conformity assessment helps consumers make better-informed choices and creates a level playing field for responsible manufacturers.
As Director, Conformity Assessment (South), PSQCA, I believe that the future of Pakistan’s quality infrastructure must be based on trust, competence, transparency and continuous improvement. The World Standards Day 2026 therefore provides us with more than an occasion to celebrate standards. It provides an opportunity to reflect on how standards can be translated into measurable quality and real-world confidence.
Pakistan has the opportunity to build an energy future that is not only cleaner, but also safer, more efficient, more reliable and more inclusive.
Let us therefore work together government, regulators, standards bodies, conformity-assessment organizations, industry, laboratories, academia and consumers—to transform standards into practical solutions for sustainable development.
A better energy future depends not only on producing cleaner energy, but on ensuring that the technologies delivering that energy meet the standards of quality, safety and performance that society deserves.
