Today’s Focus
Zinc-linked shares were mixed on Friday 16 October. Nexa Resources rose 0.32% to US$12.52, while Buenaventura fell 2.34% to US$30.42 and Teck Resources 1.70% to US$64.62.
Sources disagreed on the LME zinc price, with some showing a fall and others a rise. We therefore cannot confirm a settlement.
Wall Street’s technology selloff, with the Nasdaq down 2.14%, weighed on industrial metals. Zinc is used mainly to galvanise steel, so it follows construction and manufacturing demand.
What matters today. Zinc is a small market, but Latin America produces a lot of it, and Peru and Brazil depend on it for exports.

Assessment — Mixed shares, unconfirmed metal LOW
The shares split, with the Brazilian zinc producer higher and the Peruvian miner lower, so the signal is weak. The metal’s own move is unconfirmed.

The session read
The Ibovespa rose 0.54%, with breadth negative — 1 of 5 names higher. IPC MEX led, while BVL PERÚ lagged.
03 What moved it
TheStreet reported that worries about spending on artificial intelligence pushed the Nasdaq down 2.14%. Risk-off trading hurt industrial-metal miners.
We found no zinc-specific news for Friday. Without it, we do not claim a cause for the share moves.
04 The Latin American read
Peru is one of the world’s largest zinc producers, and Buenaventura is among its main listed miners. Brazil’s Nexa operates zinc mines and smelters in Peru and Brazil.
Buenaventura’s 2.34% fall came on a day when most gold miners rose. The sources did not confirm a reason, and we do not offer one.
05 The names to watch
Nexa is the closest listed play on zinc in Latin America. Teck is a large producer with zinc and copper assets.
Hecla is better known for silver and gold. Its 1.67% fall fits a weak day for miners.
06 The outlook
A confirmed zinc settlement would clarify the picture. Until then the shares follow Wall Street.
Industrial demand data from China and the US will drive the metal. A weaker US dollar would help prices.
07 What to watch
- Zinc price: A confirmed LME close would show whether the metal fell.
- Wall Street: The Nasdaq’s direction sets the tone for miners.
- Peru: Watch Buenaventura after its 2.34% fall.
- China: Factory data would show demand for galvanised steel.
Background: Nexa Falls 1.34% to US$12.48 as Buenaventura Rises 2.1%.
Background: Copper Fund Edges Up 0.13% as Freeport Slips 0.7%.
