Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein held a telephone consultation on Monday, October 12, 2026, with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to review bilateral relations and coordinate on volatile regional security developments.
The bilateral engagement focused heavily on advancing practical mechanisms for mutual cooperation, alongside fine-tuning multilateral diplomatic arrangements ahead of the upcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ministerial summit slated to convene in Baghdad next week.
According to an official communique from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two top diplomats exchanged assessments regarding ongoing logistical and political preparations for hosting the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC member states in the Iraqi capital.
Baghdad’s hosting of the high-level Islamic bloc summit comes as Iraq actively positions itself as a central diplomatic nexus capable of bridging regional divides and providing neutral ground for consensus-building amid rising polarization across the Middle East.
Turning to regional security, Hussein and Araghchi emphasized the critical necessity of returning to the negotiating table to de-escalate cross-border frictions and protect broader regional stability.
The ministers affirmed that direct political dialogue remains the most viable pathway to defusing armed tensions, safeguarding civilian infrastructure, and averting wider military spillover that could threaten international transit corridors and collective economic interests across neighboring states.
