Uber is losing one of the people steering its self-driving ambitions. Sarfraz Maredia, an executive overseeing the company’s autonomous efforts, will leave next month.
His last day is set for November 16, 2026, closing out a run of more than 12 years at the ride-hailing giant.
Who takes over
Uber is not naming a single replacement. Instead, Maredia’s responsibilities will be split between two senior directors: Samarth Kejriwal and Aaron Emrich.
Both have substantial tenure at Uber. That suggests the company is leaning on continuity rather than bringing in an outsider to reset the program.
A revolving door in the autonomy unit
Maredia’s departure does not arrive in isolation. Uber’s autonomous division has seen several leadership exits in 2026.
Earlier this year, Guy Peterson and Lando Juarez both left. Add Maredia, and the unit has now lost multiple senior figures in a single calendar year.
The turnover comes against a backdrop of broader corporate restructuring. On September 2, 2026, Uber announced it would cut approximately 3,300 corporate roles. That works out to roughly 10% of its workforce.
The stated goal was to streamline operations and redirect resources toward autonomous vehicle initiatives.
The $10 billion bet
The scale of that strategy is significant. Uber has committed more than $10 billion to building out robotaxi partnerships.
Rather than developing every piece of self-driving technology in-house, Uber’s approach centers on partnerships. It wants to be the network that matches riders with autonomous vehicles, much as it already matches riders with human drivers.
Uber has also been pruning its geographic footprint. The company has pulled out of markets including Nigeria and Uganda, even as it pours money into autonomy elsewhere.
What this means
For investors, the core question is execution. Uber has tied a commitment of more than $10 billion and a workforce reduction of roughly 10% to the idea that autonomy is its future.
Uber’s decision to promote from within offers some reassurance. Kejriwal and Emrich are long-tenured insiders, which may limit disruption to existing partner relationships and project timelines.
Cutting around 3,300 corporate roles is meant to make Uber leaner and more focused. In the short term, workforce reductions of that size can disrupt project timelines and partner dynamics before any efficiency gains show up.
Investors will want to see how quickly Kejriwal and Emrich settle into their expanded roles. They will also watch whether the pace of new robotaxi partnerships holds steady, and whether any further senior departures follow.
