By Breaking Belize News Staff: The murder trial of Jamie Caesar Young, accused of fatally shooting his former girlfriend’s new partner during a high-speed pursuit along the Philip Goldson Highway in 2024, has been postponed yet again.
Young was scheduled to stand trial before High Court Justice Candace Nanton on Thursday, October 15, but the proceedings could not begin due to unforeseen circumstances. The matter was adjourned to Friday, October 16, at 9:00 a.m.
Young, who is represented by attorney Dr. Lynden Jones, is charged with the March 16, 2024 murder of 30-year-old former Belize Defence Force soldier and bus driver Damion Dominique Baptist of Burrell Boom.
According to police, Baptist was travelling with Young’s former girlfriend when Young allegedly pursued them in a grey pickup truck along the highway near Ladyville.
Investigators allege that Young repeatedly pulled alongside their vehicle and fired shots, eventually striking Baptist in the head and causing him to lose control of his red Ford Fusion, which crashed into a lamppost near Our Lady of the Way RC School.
Baptist was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Young was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault against the woman.
The latest adjournment follows an earlier postponement on October 5, when the trial could not proceed because Young’s attorney was reportedly ill. BBN previously reported on that delay.
The case is now expected to proceed on Friday morning.
