Steelers Week 6 injury report vs. Buccaneers: What Rico Dowdle’s status means for Jaylen Warren fantasy owners appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are dealing with several injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but one of the biggest fantasy football storylines centers on the running back position. Rico Dowdle is officially questionable with a toe injury despite practicing in full on Thursday and Friday, leaving fantasy managers waiting to see whether he will return after missing three consecutive games.
Pittsburgh will also be without wide receivers Roman Wilson (finger) and Ben Skowronek (calf), while DK Metcalf is questionable after missing Friday’s practice with an illness. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, cornerback Jamel Dean, and defensive tackle Keeanu Benton are also questionable. Safety DeShon Elliott remains unavailable with a knee injury.
The receiving injuries could put additional pressure on Pittsburgh’s remaining playmakers, making the backfield situation particularly important to monitor. However, Dowdle’s potential return does not automatically make Jaylen Warren a risky fantasy start. Warren has been one of the Steelers’ most productive offensive players recently, and head coach Mike McCarthy has made it clear that his role is not going away.

Jaylen Warren & Rico Dowdle
Warren has taken full advantage of Dowdle’s absence, delivering consistent production and establishing himself as a featured piece of Pittsburgh’s offense. His recent performances have made it difficult to imagine the Steelers reducing his workload, even if Dowdle is cleared to play against Tampa Bay.
McCarthy has publicly backed Warren, emphasizing that the running back is playing excellent football and that the coaching staff needs to continue putting him in positions to make plays. That endorsement matters for fantasy managers because it suggests Pittsburgh will not automatically return to the shared workload the team initially envisioned before Dowdle’s injury.
Warren should remain the safer fantasy option heading into Week 6, particularly in PPR leagues. His ability to contribute as both a runner and receiver gives him a reliable path to touches, and Pittsburgh has little reason to disrupt what has worked so well. Even with Dowdle potentially returning, Warren should continue to receive a significant share of the backfield opportunities.
That does not mean Dowdle has no fantasy value. The veteran has shown that he can be productive when healthy, especially when Pittsburgh finds ways to get him into space. His combination of running ability and receiving skills could give the Steelers a useful complement to Warren, allowing the offense to keep both players involved without forcing either one to carry the entire workload.
If Dowdle is active, fantasy managers should expect him to have a role, but it is difficult to predict how many touches he will receive in his first game back. Pittsburgh could ease him into action after three missed games, particularly with Warren playing so well. Dowdle is a more speculative fantasy option until his workload becomes clearer, while Warren remains a player managers should feel comfortable starting.
The best outcome for Pittsburgh may be finding a way for both backs to succeed. Warren can remain the featured player while Dowdle receives enough carries and targets to make an impact. That arrangement would give the Steelers a deeper offense without sacrificing the production Warren has delivered in recent weeks.
DK Metcalf and Pittsburgh’s receiving options
The Steelers’ injuries at wide receiver could also influence how the offense approaches Sunday’s game. Metcalf is questionable after missing Friday’s practice because of an illness, while Wilson and Skowronek have already been ruled out. With Michael Pittman Jr. on injured reserve, Pittsburgh is running short on healthy wide receivers.
If Metcalf cannot play, the Steelers may need to lean more heavily on their tight ends and running backs to move the ball. That could create additional opportunities for Warren as a receiving option, although fantasy managers should not assume every missing target will automatically go his way.
Metcalf’s availability remains important because his ability to stretch the field gives Pittsburgh a dimension it would otherwise lack. Without him, the offense could become more reliant on shorter throws and the running game, potentially increasing Warren’s involvement while allowing Tampa Bay to focus more attention on stopping him.
What fantasy managers should do
Warren should remain the preferred fantasy option in Pittsburgh’s backfield, regardless of whether Dowdle is cleared to return. Dowdle’s two full practices are encouraging, but his questionable designation means fantasy managers should monitor his status through Sunday morning before making a lineup decision.
If Dowdle plays, he could offer some value as a complementary back, particularly if he gets opportunities near the goal line. But Warren has earned his role, and the Steelers have made it clear they intend to keep using him.
Fantasy managers should not overreact to Dowdle’s potential return. Warren remains the safer start, while Dowdle is a player to monitor until his workload becomes more predictable. Pittsburgh has a chance to make both running backs useful, but for now, Warren is the one fantasy managers should trust.
