The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has proposed preparing detailed project reports for transforming three road stretches in Chennai — covering Taramani Link Road, Marmalange Bridge to Wallajah Road, and Grand Southern Trunk Road — into model urban mobility corridors.
The proposed work involves preparing detailed designs for the selected stretches, with road improvements planned around mobility, accessibility, utility management and liveability. The State Highways Department will execute the project, while CUMTA will coordinate the preparation of the detailed project reports.
The corridors are to be designed with uniform carriageways, green medians, and dedicated service lanes. The plans will also examine the need to rehabilitate or widen existing culverts and bridges, provide grade separators where required, and improve pedestrian facilities and intersections.

The designs are expected to incorporate dedicated footpaths, pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming measures, designated bus bays and stops, parking facilities and cycling infrastructure wherever possible. Green corridors and landscaping are also among the proposed features.
The project will include planning for underground utilities and stormwater drainage. The designs will also consider provisions for electricity and telecommunications cables, water supply, sewerage and other utility services.
CUMTA will coordinate with various departments, including Highways, the Greater Chennai Corporation, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, Chennai Metro Rail Limited, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and the police.
The consultant will study existing transport and urban infrastructure plans, assess traffic and road conditions, and examine pedestrian and cycling networks, public transport facilities, accident-prone locations and the availability of road space. The work will also include surveys and investigations to inform the designs.
The project aims to integrate public transport with walking and cycling facilities, improve road safety and provide for stormwater management and utility infrastructure. The detailed project reports will set out the proposed designs and engineering requirements for the selected corridors, according to CUMTA.
