A local journalist was injured in a machete attack in the Singua area of Jamalpur’s Sarishabari upazila early yesterday.
Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, secretary of the Dhanbari Press Club, and upazila correspondent for Amar Desh and NTV, was heading to his home in Sarishabari from Dhanbari when the attack took place around 3:00am.
Hafizur said he had left Dhanbari for Sarishabari around 11:00pm after finishing work. His motorcycle broke down on the way, and by the time he had repaired it and reached Singua, it was around 3:00am.
He said a pickup van waylaid him and five to six men armed with machetes stepped out of the vehicle. The attackers first struck his motorcycle, rendering it unusable, and then hacked his left hand, he said. “When I shouted for help, they fled,” Hafizur said.
Locals took him to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex.
Sarishabari Police Station OC Iqbal Hossain said police were investigating the incident and that filing of a case was underway.
