Protein Powder Prices Are Skyrocketing. Use These Smart Strategies to Save Money and Maintain Muscle.

MY WIFE AND I use a budgeting app to track our Amazon orders. Last week, we compared three of them.

• October 18, 2021: a five-pound tub of whey protein isolate, $54.95.
• May 27, 2024: five pounds of whey concentrate; the cheaper, less filtered grade, $59.95.
• September 18, 2026: the same concentrate, same tub, same seller, delivered to our porch on a monthly subscription, $102.95.

In five years, whey concentrate has nearly doubled. Now that’s inflation.

Sure, plenty of other things have nearly doubled in that half-decade span, with eggs, electricity, and gasoline hogging the news cycles. Whey protein powder, though, is a more curious case because unlike those aforementioned necessities of life, it used to be totally worthless.

Whey is what's left over when milk curdles into cheese. For most of the 20th century, cheesemakers dumped it into streams or spread it on fields. Federal environmental regulations eventually phased out that practice and so the dairy industry had to find a new way to push whey.

Eventually filtration technology allowed manufacturers to turn whey it into a powder. And not just any powder, but the most complete, most digestible protein-per gram money could buy.

For decades, supplement companies could buy whey cheaply and apply significant markup to what they made with it because the supply was, in effect, free.

Which brings up to today, where demand for whey has spiked and the market expanding well beyond muscleheads. According to a Gallup survey from July 2026, eleven percent of American adults now take a GLP-1 drug, up from 3 percent in 2024. These patients, who find themselves wanting to eat less, are advised to eat lean, easily digested protein like whey powder so they can preserve some muscle while they’re shedding fat. More demand equates to less supply—and it’ll likely get worse.

USDA's benchmark for 34 percent whey protein concentrate averaged 97 cents a pound in January 2024 and $2.14 in August 2026, the highest monthly figure in history. In July, USDA's Dairy Market News put 80 percent concentrate at $12.50 to $13 a pound and isolate near $14, and described bulk buyers as "willing to pay whatever it takes" for available loads.

The Byproduct Became the Product

ONE BULK BUYER knows this "protein math" intimately. "Our cost per kilo is four times higher now than it was four years ago," says Jeff Byers, co-founder and CEO of the supplement company Momentous, who spent four seasons as an NFL offensive lineman, most of them with the Carolina Panthers, before transitioning into the nutrition business. Among the company’s other health and wellness offerings, Momentous sells a single whey product, a 91 percent grass-fed European isolate.

When it comes to why whey prices have soared, Byers points to the case of Glanbia, an Irish dairy cooperative that became the largest producer of American-style cheddar in the United States and the largest milk processor in Idaho. (Glanbia actually bought Optimum Nutrition in 2008 so it could sell its own whey back to lifters in a tub.) But Glanbia, for as massive as it is, still can’t produce enough whey to feed the growing masses.

“[Whey] is expensive because we don't have enough cheese manufacturing to make more whey protein,” Byers says. “You have to have more cheese factories to have more whey protein isolate.” And building cheese factories is slow. "It's hundreds of millions of capital costs. They've got to build buildings, stainless steel filtration systems, dryers. It's not like boom, it's done,” he says.

Brett Massimino, PhD, associate professor and chair of the Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics at Virginia Commonwealth University and a former bodybuilder himself, calls the root cause supply inelasticity.

"It takes massive amounts of cheese production to yield even modest amounts of whey concentrates,” Massimino says. “If the cheese market does not demand significantly higher output, then whey volumes remain fundamentally constrained."

He cites a cattle problem on top of the cheese problem: With beef prices where they are, "the profitability of beef cows has been much higher than dairy," and farmers with fixed capacity have shifted their herds accordingly.

Despite the efforts of milk-moustache advertising campaigns and raw-milk GOMAD enthusiasts, Americans drink far less milk than they used to, 127 pounds per person in 2024 versus 196 in 2000, and fluid milk has fallen from 46 percent of all dairy consumed in 1975 to under 20 percent. People have kept eating cheese, though.

Per capita cheese consumption was 39.9 pounds in 2024, three-tenths of a pound off the 2023 record, butter hit an all-time high, and total dairy consumption on a milk-equivalent basis sits at 651 pounds a head, up 12 percent over 30 years. The cheese business is on sound footing; it just can't grow fast enough to feed a protein market whose high-protein product launches quadrupled between 2013 and 2024.

"Large food manufacturers such as Pepsi and General Mills utilize massive long-term contracts that provide [those two brands] with cost stability," Massimino says. Supplement companies mostly can't. "Sports nutrition manufacturers rely on spot prices for whey, which are extremely volatile. Those manufacturers have no choice but to buffer against this price volatility by passing price increases on to consumers."

Why Concentrate Costs Almost as Much as Isolate

EVEN AS WHEY concentrate costs shoot into the stratosphere, the price of whey isolate—which undergoes extra filtration to remove most of the fat and lactose and is the only type of whey Momentous sells—have remained higher but grown at a less steep rate. Byers explains why: "Because raw prices are so high, brands are putting more concentrate in products than isolate. That's driving up demand for concentrate faster than for isolate, a more premium product. Demand goes up, price goes up."

Whether you should be buying isolate at all is where experts diverge. Richie Kirwan, a senior lecturer in nutrition and exercise physiology at Liverpool John Moores University, has worked with lifters for a decade and tells me, "I've only ever recommended whey isolate to people who have issues with lactose tolerance. If you don't have issues with the amount of lactose in concentrate, isolate is just not worth the extra cost."

Massimino says the same: "For the vast majority of consumers that don't have lactose intolerance, whey protein concentrate provides the exact same muscle-building benefits at a significantly lower price point." Byers, who sells nothing but isolate, argues that a purer input needs fewer flow agents (which prevent the powder from caking), fillers (usually for flavor or to add weight), and emulsifiers (for mixability) to taste right.

Jay Luthar, MD, who runs a longevity practice in Boston and teaches at Harvard Medical School, agrees that such added ingredients can reduce the nutritional value of what you’re buying. He offers a simple shorthand: divide grams of protein per serving by the serving size in grams. "A quality protein powder typically comes in at 70 to 80 percent or higher. If it's lower, you're paying for filler."

Massimino also expects manufacturer corner-cutting and shrinkflation to begin with fillers and other additives. He first advises shoppers to check the unit price, since shrinking the tub is easier than raising the price, then to read the label for "whey blends" that quietly swap in soy or pea, or for manufacturers "substituting non-essential amino acids to artificially inflate protein counts without providing a complete protein source."

His recommendation and Luthar's are the same: Look for certification from a body like NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport. "A certified cheaper product is generally more trustworthy than an uncertified expensive one," Luthar says.

Protein Cereal Is Not Going to Save You

BYERS KNOWS THE fitness market and expects that this protein-in-everything fad will pass. "Putting protein in chips doesn't make chips healthier. You can glance at a protein cereal and see that it's three or four grams per serving. This is not protein cereal, guys. They're making a protein claim on three grams."

His hunch is that the buyers propping up those products are the most fickle in the market. When this fad passes, the way the low-fat and gluten-free fads passed, demand for whey will decrease slightly and supply will be loosened, though the golden age of protein pricing is long gone.

Katie Knappenberger, RD, program director for performance nutrition at Northwestern Medicine, isn’t worried about rising protein costs greatly impacting our diets. She tells me that most Americans already exceed the recommended daily allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram, and that a powder is "generally unnecessary" for anyone who consistently eats dairy, eggs, fish, meat, soy, beans, and lentils.

However, if you’re a lifter trying to hit your 160 grams of protein a day, whey is still cheaper than whole food. Byers's back-of-the-tablecloth math: "Twenty grams of really high-quality whey isolate is still only three bucks a serving."

A meat stick at the checkout is eight grams of protein, a couple grams of fat, and three dollars, and a half-decent rib eye at a grocery store like Whole Foods will cost you $25 to $30 a pound.

Even at its historic high, Byers says, whey "is still the most cost-effective per-gram protein, completely." Physiology professor Kirwan agrees on the muscle science and disagrees on the emphasis on whey, because once you're at 1.6 grams per kilogram, "we don't see any real difference in muscle growth between whey and plant proteins like soy," and if money only covers one supplement, he says creatine, not powder.

Massimino's advice to a broke lifter starting out now: Buy a certified protein and creatine, skip the pre-workouts and largely useless testosterone boosters, and treat your tub of whey as "a convenience tool rather than a dietary staple."

New Capacity Comes Online in 2027

HELP IS COMING. Glanbia is adding 10 million pounds of whey protein isolate at its Clovis, New Mexico joint venture, which will open in 2027. Ireland's Tirlán has €126 million going into a whey plant expected to launch operations that same year. But, as with the power plants opening to feed an increasingly hungry grid, it is too little, too late.

Byers didn’t see any relief whatsoever in his first-quarter 2027 pricing. "The price is not down," he says. "The whey protein I'm buying in January is getting milked probably today."

Cows in the Northern Hemisphere fall off in winter, and some of the European farms Momentous buys from don't milk at all in the cold months. That means next spring's raw material is priced before either of these new plants comes online. "I don't think price relief for whey protein is a six-month or 12-month thing. I think this is a 2028 thing. The price will come back to earth. They will never go back to normal."

The same thing has happened with creatine, the other product Momentous built its name on. "There was zero growth in that market for two decades. All of a sudden, in the last four or five years, after all that research about its cognitive benefits was publicized, boom." One contract manufacturer reported spot pricing on a container of creatine jumping from $85,500 to $630,000 within a year. Byers says the underlying mechanism here is similar to whey: "It's giant factories that take a massive amount of capital expenditure to build, and until those factories come online, suppliers hold the key."

So there you have it: New whey plants come online, cereal companies move on to their next fad (AI-infused corn flakes, perhaps?), the whey price gradually drops from wherever it peaks, and our five-pound tubs settle at $85 or $90 and hopefully remain there for a spell.

Unless you’re willing to switch to soy and pea proteins, five-pound tubs of which can still be found in the $50 range and which a growing body of peer-reviewed research has found to be a viable replacement for whey for most trainees, those increases will take a toll in the long term.

"Ten extra bucks here and there, 20 extra bucks a month, is not nothing for the consumer," Byers concedes. My $54.95 whey isolate was bought at the same time I was still required to wear an N95 mask when I went to grocery stores and gyms—a mere five years ago, yet at the pace everything now moves, it feels like a long time ago.
