After initially reporting that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts would be out indefinitely due to a superficial blood clot in his calf, the franchise announced on Monday that the former Super Bowl MVP would miss the rest of the season after further testing revealed several blood clots in his lungs.
NFL insider Tom Pelissero broke the news on Monday morning that Hurts’ participation in last weekend’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars came after his initial diagnosis with active superficial blood clots in London in his calf, that doctors advised the quarterback not to sleep as a precaution, and that “he had been awake for roughly 36 hours.”
Pelissero clarified Monday afternoon that Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, told him Hurts was allowed to sleep after rejoining the team in a room set aside for him in the stadium, but the revelation did little to quell questions or the obvious scrutiny of the franchise’s handling of the situation.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was expectedly pressed on the issue during his Monday press conference, but deferred to the organization’s medical team.
#Eagles HC Nick Sirianni faced a barrage of questions about Jalen Hurts for 5 straight minutes.
To be fair to Sirianni, he probably shouldn’t be the only person answering for all of this.

“I’m not a medical expert,” Sirianni said. “I lean on our guys in all those situations. I’m a football coach. I lean on our medical folks in every situation. I have full trust and full faith in them. It’s not just me who has major care for our players; it’s them as well. We are all there, and I’m glad to be part of an organization that cares about our guys the way ours do.”
Sirianni was then asked why Hurts was allowed to fly home with active blood clots, which can be extremely dangerous, but the head coach doubled down on relinquishing responsibility to the Eagles’ medical staff, before asserting that the franchise always puts player health and safety “first and foremost.”
“Again, I’m not a medical expert. Same type, same deal there,” he answered. “We get medical information from our guys, and we always put the player’s health first and foremost in every situation.”
After questions persisted, Sirianni pointed to the statements the Eagles have provided about their franchise quarterback and said he was “going to leave it at that.” Just as many questions remain about the protocols taken surrounding Hurts’ health, but it seems clear that if any answers do come down the pipeline, they won’t be from the quarterback’s head coach.
