Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has outlined the criteria used to select Kim Lars Björkegren to lead the interim Black Stars technical team for the November 2026 international window.
Asante Twum said the selection process prioritised continuity, coaches working in the Ghana Premier League and technical expertise within Ghana’s national team structure.
“So, the first consideration was institutional memory and continuity. The second was to look within the Ghana Premier League.
“The third was to look at the national team structure, assess all our national teams and identify coaches handling them who had the competence and quality to join the technical team. They settled on Kim,” he explained on TV3's Sports Station show.
The appointment of Björkegren, who currently coaches the Black Queens, forms part of efforts to stabilise the Black Stars following a disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia, prompting the departure of Carlos Queiroz and the search for an interim arrangement while the GFA continues its recruitment process.
The Swedish coach will work alongside Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram as assistant coaches, with former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda appointed goalkeepers’ coach.
The arrangement is intended specifically for Ghana’s November fixtures against Somalia, giving the coach search committee more time to identify a substantive head coach.
Björkegren’s appointment has attracted attention because he is already responsible for the Black Queens.
However, the GFA’s stated approach brings together international coaching experience, familiarity with Ghanaian football and continuity within the national team setup.
The interim technical team’s immediate task will be to prepare the Black Stars for the Somalia matches as Ghana seek to revive their qualifying campaign.
