Shillong, Oct 13: Teaching will be hit in deficit schools across Meghalaya as teachers and employees begin a three-day mass casual leave from October 13 to 15, 2026.
The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association (GHDSTEA) said they are going ahead with the agitation after the government’s response to their charter of demands proved “indifferent”.
KJDSTA president Boswell Pala said the government reply dated October 8 from Education Department Joint Secretary D Lyngdoh did not address their September 25 memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
Their key demands include revocation of Scheme 2026 and restoration of the Board of Trustees (BOT).
Instead of revoking the scheme, the letter directed teachers to register for PRAN for implementation of Scheme 2026, Pala said.
On BOT, he said the government proposed including deficit teachers in the board constituted on April 27, 2026, which the associations have rejected.
“The letter did not reply to the points of demand. There were points on which it chose to be silent completely,” Pala said.
He said the two associations find the government response unacceptable and have decided to proceed with the agitation while keeping the door open for talks.
“The Associations will always be ready to again put forth their concerns before the government,” Pala added, appealing for cooperation from teachers and understanding from parents and students.
