By Breaking Belize News Staff: Nearly a year after 61-year-old school warden Dawn Bernard was allegedly set on fire by her common-law husband, Frederick Wagner, the murder case against him has suffered another delay.
Wagner appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 9, but proceedings were adjourned because the Chief Magistrate, who has carriage of the matter, was unavailable. Wagner, who remains unrepresented, is now scheduled to return to court on October 26, 2026, as the case awaits a preliminary inquiry.
The latest adjournment follows earlier delays, including a June court appearance when prosecutors acknowledged that the case file was still not ready despite Wagner having been charged with murder in December 2025.
The case stems from a disturbing incident on November 10, 2025, at Bernard’s Lakeview Street residence in Belize City. According to police, Bernard suffered extensive burns to her face, shoulders, chest, back and hands after allegedly being doused with rubbing alcohol and set ablaze.
Before her condition deteriorated, Bernard reportedly identified Wagner as her attacker, telling investigators, “Da meh man do meh this.” She later slipped into a coma and died on November 16.
Wagner was initially charged with attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm on November 14. Following Bernard’s death and a post-mortem examination, he was formally charged with murder on December 10, 2025.
Police previously confirmed that Bernard had made a domestic violence complaint against Wagner in 2018, although no additional complaints were recorded afterward. Her death sparked renewed concern over domestic violence and the dangers faced by women in abusive relationships.
Wagner remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison. The murder allegation against him has not been proven in court.
