Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is in hospital in Munich after collapsing at their training centre, the club has confirmed.
"Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday. The first-team head coach was watching the second string's session," a Bayern statement said.
"Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice."
The confirmation came after the Bild paper and Sky TV said that the 40-year-old was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
"Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs," board member for sport Max Eberl said in the statement.
"His coaching team, whom we trust completely, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery," Eberl added.
Assistant Aaron Danks is expected to oversee their Bundesliga match on Sunday at Freiburg.
Viral infection and hip problems
Kompany had recently been suffering from a viral infection and had hip problems.
On Tuesday, he sat out the final training session ahead of the Champions League match against Arsenal to rest, and was also absent from the mandatory press conference, with Danks standing in.
However, Kompany was at the stadium to coach Wednesday night's match.
After the draw against the English champions, Kompany said: "As a manager, you always want to do everything and give it your all. I caught quite a nasty virus last week; naturally, I didn't listen to my body, and at some point my body just said: 'Right, that's enough now!'"
Watching Bundesliga match from a seat
Kompany was already feeling unwell during the 6-1 Bundesliga win against RB Leipzig last Saturday and could only watch the match while seated on the Bayern bench.
According to Bild, Kompany had to lie down briefly on a sofa at the Allianz Arena at half-time and after the match.
"He's been battling a virus all week, which has been taking its toll on him," said Eberl, who stood in for Kompany at the press conference and in post-match interviews. "He really isn't feeling well."
Kompany had therefore already missed training last Monday.
