Trinidad Detains 25 Suspected Immigrants

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO · MIGRATION

Police in Trinidad and Tobago have detained 25 suspected immigrants after stopping a vessel off the western peninsula on Tuesday 20 October 2026. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) announced the operation on Thursday 22 October, CNC3, the television arm of the Guardian Media group, reported.

The island sits about 7 miles (11 km) from Venezuela and has tightened its handling of illegal immigrants since October 2025. Its approach to boats, detention and removals echoes the debate over illegal entry in the United States.

How Police Stopped the Suspected Immigrants’ Boat

The TTPS says the Coastal and Air Support Unit, with Western Division officers, ran the operation at about 11:30 pm on 20 October. Officers stopped and searched the vessel and found 25 people on board, all suspected of being illegal immigrants.

All 25 were detained, and the vessel was seized and secured. The announcement gave no description of the boat or its crew.

What Operation BLAST Is

Operation BLAST stands for Bringing Land, Air and Sea Together, a police effort that uses drone technology to search coastal areas and forested ground. CNC3 says the drones covered both the shoreline and the bush behind it.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Operations Suzette Martin sanctioned the operation, and Assistant Commissioner Collis Hazel coordinated it. Assistant Superintendent Ronny Rampallard and Inspector Fabian Brisbane supervised the officers.

Why Trinidad’s Waters Draw Migrant Boats

Trinidad lies about 7 miles (11 km) from Venezuela’s northern coast, the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington research group, says. Its western side faces the Gulf of Paria, the sheltered sea between the island and Venezuela.

In September 2024, the Trinidad Guardian said 17 of 20 people on a vessel off the north coast appeared to be foreign nationals. Police have not said where this boat started or where its passengers come from.

Trinidad’s Tougher Line Since 2025

In October 2025, the Ministry of Homeland Security ordered that detained illegal immigrants stay in the Immigration Detention Centre until repatriation. The order barred release on supervision orders.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said then that deportations applied to illegal immigrants who had committed criminal offences, the Jamaica Observer reported. The Trinidad Express added that the government was weighing a mass deportation exercise.

The Washington Backdrop

Relations between Trinidad and Venezuela grew tense in October 2025 over the US military build-up in the region. Caracas accused Port of Spain of helping Washington pursue regime change, and President Nicolás Maduro suspended all energy agreements, the Jamaica Observer reported.

That history makes any boat crossing the Gulf of Paria a security question as well as a migration one. Police have not linked this vessel to any wider case, and our explainer on who holds power in Trinidad and Tobago shows who sets policy.

What It Means for US Readers

Trinidad is a close US partner in the southern Caribbean, and its border enforcement feeds the wider picture of Caribbean migration routes. Its detention rules since 2025 mirror the US push to hold and remove people who enter without papers.

No report links this vessel to the United States, and police have not said any of the suspected immigrants was heading north. Nothing in the police announcement changes entry rules for visitors, so US travellers face no new restrictions.

What Is Not Known

Police have not said where the 25 suspected immigrants come from, how old they are, or whether children were on board. They have also not named the vessel’s owner or captain, or said where the trip began.

No charges have been announced, and it is unclear whether the group will be held at the Immigration Detention Centre or removed. The announcement does not say whether any passenger will seek protection, or whether the October 2025 detention order covers them.
