San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro missed another extra-point attempt on Monday night against the Washington Commanders, continuing an unusual trend during his time with the team. Following Christian McCaffrey’s touchdown run in the first quarter, the missed kick left the 49ers leading 13-3. David Lombardi from The San Francisco Standard noted on X that this marked Pineiro’s seventh missed extra point with the franchise, which stands in stark contrast to his reliability on field goals.
Although the early miss didn’t affect the outcome, it reignited significant scrutiny of his ongoing kicking struggles. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was candid about the persistent issues after the game, as NBC Sports Bay Area reported. Pineiro has consistently struggled with PATs (points after touchdowns) throughout his career, and Shanahan emphasized that these mistakes cannot continue.
“Yeah, he’s got to make them,” Shanahan stated. “He missed another one today. Fortunately, it didn’t hurt us, but everyone knows the answer to that: you’ve got to make your extra points.” With multiple missed extra points and field goals accumulating this season, Pineiro’s job security may be at risk due to this ongoing inconsistency.

Fortunately for San Francisco, these special teams mistakes were overshadowed by the final play of the game. Defensive end Romello Height sacked Jayden Daniels as time expired, preserving a dramatic 23-17 victory that kept the 49ers undefeated at 6-0 heading into Week 7.
