Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein held a telephone conversation on Friday, October 23, 2026, with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, strongly condemning the deadly armed attack that targeted mourners at a church in Jordan’s southern Karak Governorate.
During the call, Hussein conveyed Iraq’s full solidarity with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in confronting terrorism and violent extremism.
The Iraqi foreign minister extended the government and people of Iraq’s heartfelt condolences to the leadership, government, and citizens of Jordan, as well as to the families of the victims, while wishing a swift recovery to those injured.
The diplomatic outreach followed a shooting incident earlier on Friday, in which unidentified gunmen opened fire during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hmoud, located in Karak Governorate approximately 180 kilometers south of Amman.
The attack left at least seven people dead and dozens wounded, prompting heightened security deployments and an active manhunt by Jordanian security agencies.
