Testifying before Justice Charles Ondieki in his ongoing corruption case, Sonko presented video footage he claimed exposed behind-the-scenes dealings involving his former lawyer, former Deputy State House Controller, and former High Court judge Said.
Sonko's Allegations Against His Former Legal Team
Sonko told the court that his application for conservatory orders to halt the impeachment was abandoned after alleged discussions took place between his lawyers and senior government officials. According to his testimony, his lawyer attended meetings at State House, including one that reportedly involved former President Uhuru Kenyatta, where withdrawing legal representation was allegedly raised as a possibility.
He further claimed that funds were transferred into the advocate's bank account and that separate meetings between the renowned city lawyer and the judge took place in connection with the court application.
Sonko said he was ultimately left without the legal support he had anticipated as the case proceeded.
The court was also told that, after assuming office as governor, Sonko received information pointing to alleged corruption within the county administration. He said individuals connected to county revenue operations handed him KSh 70 million, which he subsequently took to State House to demonstrate the extent of the alleged graft.
Sonko Presents Videos to Defend Governance Record
Beyond the impeachment allegations, Sonko used video evidence to defend his time in office, showing confrontations with individuals he accused of unlawfully seizing private property in Parklands, Pangani and Adam's Arcade. He alleged that some of those involved operated through companies with ties to City Hall officials and used court orders to remove legitimate property owners.
The former governor maintained that his resistance to transferring certain county functions and revenue streams to the National Government was a contributing factor in his political downfall. He said his legal advisers had confirmed at the time that no legal framework existed for such a transfer, covering areas including infrastructure and county revenue collection.
Sonko was elected Nairobi governor in 2017 before his removal from office in December 2020, following disputes over county management and its relationship with the national administration. He subsequently served as Nairobi senator.
The allegations against his former lawyers, State House officials and the judge form part of his courtroom testimony and have not been established as findings of wrongdoing. His defence continues as Justice Ondieki examines the presented evidence.
