Alibaba has announced a new set of smart glasses. It is the company’s latest step in turning an AI strategy into something people can actually wear.
From conference demo to store shelves
The glasses story started as a preview. Alibaba first showed its Quark AI Glasses at the World AI Conference in Shanghai in July 2025.
Retail came a few months later. The glasses officially went on sale in China on November 27, 2025. The product line was later referred to as Qwen Glasses, after the company’s flagship AI model.
Two main variants made up the launch lineup. The premium S1 uses micro-OLED displays and starts at 3,799 yuan, or approximately $537.
The lighter G1 is the budget-friendly option. It starts at 1,899 yuan, around $268.
Both models run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 platform. That chip handles the on-device work, while Alibaba’s Qwen AI provides the brains.
The feature list reads like a tour of Alibaba’s empire. Users get real-time translation, Alipay payments and Taobao shopping integration.
A busy 2026 for the glasses roadmap
In March 2026, the Quark Glasses made their global debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
A series of over-the-air updates followed. These are software upgrades pushed directly to the device, much like a phone update, so existing owners get new features without buying new hardware.
Alibaba also introduced the N1 series. That lineup includes a Pro version that supports eye tracking and iris payments.
The N1 Pro was released on October 13, 2026.
The stated goal is to make the glasses a capable hands-free assistant. That puts them squarely in competition with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Why Alibaba wants hardware at all
The Qwen app recorded over 400 million downloads by late 2025. Glasses give that audience a new, always-available way to use the model.
Chinese government initiatives aimed at boosting the AR sector have created favorable conditions for domestic players.
The average weight of domestic AI glasses is approximately 38 grams, light enough that wearing them all day is at least plausible.
What this means for Alibaba and its rivals
The ecosystem logic is the clearest advantage. Few competitors can bundle an AI assistant with a major shopping platform and a payment network inside the same frame.
Meta has the social graph and the Ray-Ban brand. Xiaomi has deep hardware experience and a loyal domestic customer base. Alibaba’s edge is that the glasses connect directly to where money changes hands.
Early sales point to a robust reception within Chinese retail channels. Global penetration remains uncertain, and consumer habits and competition look different outside the domestic market.
Overseas buyers may not have Taobao or Alipay woven into daily life. Without those hooks, the glasses become a translation and assistant device competing on features alone.
Pricing could cut both ways. The G1 at 1,899 yuan lowers the barrier to entry, while the S1 targets buyers willing to pay for better displays.
