Abdus Salam, Dinajpur
Dipshikha Meti School in Dinajpur’s Rudrapur village has earned recognition for its distinctive two-storey building, constructed with locally available earth, bamboo and thatch, blending traditional techniques with environmentally friendly architecture.
The two-storey building combines traditional construction techniques with environmentally friendly design. Natural light and ventilation were key considerations in its design, making it an example of how locally sourced materials can be used to create an alternative to conventional brick-and-concrete structures.
Construction of the school’s present building began in 2005 and was completed in 2006. In recognition of its distinctive architectural design, it received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007. The building is regarded as a notable example of environmentally friendly architecture in Bangladesh.
The voluntary organisation Dipshikha established the school on September 1, 1999, to expand educational opportunities for children in Rudrapur and neighbouring areas. Its educational approach emphasises learning through enjoyment, practical activities and the development of students’ creativity.
The building reflects local traditions and its surrounding environment. The use of locally available materials, along with provisions for natural light and ventilation, gives the structure a distinctive character while combining architectural appeal with practical functionality.
Located approximately 22–25 kilometres from Dinajpur town, the school can be reached by road from the district town. Dinajpur is accessible from Dhaka by road and rail, including the Ekota Express, Drutajan Express and Panchagarh Express trains. Visitors can travel from Dinajpur town to Rudrapur village in local transport.
Beyond its educational role, Dipshikha Meti School has attracted attention for its innovative use of local materials and traditional construction techniques. Its design demonstrates how architecture can respond to the local environment while offering an alternative approach to sustainable building in Bangladesh. #EK
