The Department of Meteorology has issued heavy rainfall and severe lightning advisories for several parts of Sri Lanka today (13), warning of rainfall reaching 100–150 mm in some areas due to an atmospheric disturbance near the island.
According to the Met Department, a low-level atmospheric disturbance persists in the Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka, bringing cloudy skies and showers or thundershowers to most parts of the country.
Under the influence of this weather system, heavy rainfall of approximately 100–150 mm is expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces.
The heavy rain advisory, issued at 10.30 a.m. today, is valid from 6.30 pm until 6.30 p.m. tomorrow (14).
Meanwhile, the Department has issued a separate advisory for severe lightning in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western and Southern provinces.
The lightning advisory, issued at 11.00 a.m., remains valid until 1.00 a.m. tomorrow (14).
The Department warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several locations within these provinces, with temporarily strong localised winds also possible.
The public has been urged to take necessary precautions, including seeking shelter indoors, avoiding open fields and water bodies, refraining from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms, and remaining alert to fallen trees and power lines.
The Met Department also advised the public to avoid using open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors and boats, during thunderstorms and to contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance. (Newswire)
