PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim says several young leaders are expected to contest as candidates in the upcoming Melaka state election.
PUTRAJAYA: Several young leaders are expected to be fielded as candidates in the Melaka state election next month, says PKR Youth (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
Muhammad Kamil, who is also the political secretary to the Finance Minister, said AMK had submitted several names to the party’s top leadership for consideration.
“God willing, I am confident that several young leaders in Melaka will be our best bet to pull off a surprise in the upcoming state election,” he told reporters after officiating the pre-launch of a coffee-table book titled Anwar Ibrahim: Kisah Yang Dirakam (A Life Recorded) here today.
Asked about the percentage of young candidates to be fielded, Muhammad Kamil said he could not confirm the exact figure, but assured that those chosen possessed their own strengths and capabilities.
“These candidates are not selected merely for their youth; they must possess capability, ‘winnability’ and other crucial criteria,” he said, adding that grassroots preparations were actively underway.
On cooperation with other coalitions, Muhammad Kamil said Pakatan Harapan (PH) should rely on its own strength in the state election.
“I believe we must not depend on the strengths or weaknesses of others. We must build our own strength,” he said.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Oct 31 for nomination, Nov 10 for early voting and Nov 14 for polling, following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on Sept 23.
The 2021 Melaka state election saw Barisan Nasional (BN) win 21 of the 28 seats, while PH secured five and Perikatan Nasional (PN) won two.
