Vestre Aker, Gamle Aker, Gamle Oslo, Frysja, Hovin, Øvre Groruddalen, Østensjø and Nordstrand are the names of the new districts agreed on by the Oslo City Council.
Both the district reform and the name changes have, however, sparked heated debate among the parties. The Green Party and the left-wing Red Party voted against giving the new districts names, arguing that they should have numbers instead.
The name change will take effect at the start of 2028, but Oslo residents will already see the new names in next year's municipal elections.
Even though most of us probably feel the strongest sense of belonging to the place where we live, whether it is Røa or Vålerenga, I hope that the new names will be seen as unifying by residents of the new districts, says health councillor Oluf Ulseth (H).
