Patras Historic Apollo Theatre Set for €20 Million Restoration

Greece’s Ministry of Culture has approved the tender documents for the €20.84 million restoration and reopening of the historic Apollo Theatre in Patras, paving the way for work on the landmark building 155 years after construction began in 1871.

The project has a budget of €20,839,903, with the Western Greece Region contributing approximately €17 million through the Western Greece 2021–2027 programme and the Ministry of Culture providing a further €3.7 million, according to regional governor Nektarios Farmakis.

The restoration aims to preserve the theatre’s architectural and historical significance while returning it to active use as a modern performance venue for theatre productions, concerts and other cultural events.

According to the tender published on the Ministry of Culture’s Diavgeia transparency portal, the project will address extensive deterioration caused by years of use, as well as alterations introduced during earlier repair and renovation works between 1956 and 1970, when builders added reinforced concrete structures.

Extensive restoration and modernisation

The restoration programme covers both the Apollo Theatre and the neighbouring Mansion of Literature and Arts. Planned works include cleaning and repairing the exterior façades, treating cracks, renewing finishes and strengthening the masonry.

Contractors will replace the existing roofs, restore the original geometry of the stage tower’s roof and install new timber roof structures with tiled coverings. They will also replace exterior windows and doors to match the theatre’s original design and reinforce both buildings to meet structural safety requirements.

The project will introduce several improvements to the theatre’s facilities and accessibility, including:

• Accessible routes and facilities for people with disabilities.

• An internal corridor connecting the theatre with the Mansion of Literature and Arts, which will accommodate the foyer and ticketing and information areas.

• Expanded dressing rooms and backstage facilities.

• New technical control rooms, equipment areas, access galleries, lifts and staircases for performers and staff.

• Restoration of the orchestra pit to its original position.

• New administrative offices, maintenance facilities, storage areas and sanitary facilities for audiences, performers and staff.

• Modern electromechanical installations, including fire-protection equipment, air-conditioning systems and a heat pump.

The works will also provide a new theatre stage built to modern standards, updated theatrical lighting, a redesigned auditorium seating layout and a new passenger lift.

A landmark of Patras’ cultural identity

Located in central Patras at Georgiou Square, the Apollo Theatre is a defining landmark of the city’s cultural heritage. Designed by German architect Ernst Ziller, the building stands as a notable example of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and is often described as a miniature version of Milan’s La Scala opera house.

Construction began in 1871, and the theatre hosted its first performance on 10 October 1872.

The Ministry of Culture has designated the building as a property requiring special protection. It serves as the permanent home of the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Patras and also hosts concerts and other cultural events.

Western Greece Regional Governor Nektarios Farmakis welcomed the tender announcement, describing the theatre as a living part of Patras’ history that belongs to both its past and its future.

“It is a part of the soul of Patras, and its place is once again at the centre of the city’s cultural life,” he said.

Patras Mayor Kostas Peletidis also welcomed the announcement, calling the tender a vindication of the city’s efforts to restore its historic landmark and return it to full operation.

He said the project followed years of persistent and systematic work by the municipal administration, which began pursuing European funding for the restoration in 2015 under the 2014–2020 funding programme.
