The Golden State Warriors are preparing for the start of the 2026-27 NBA season, but uncertainty continues to surround one of their most important offseason additions.
Veteran big man Kristaps Porzingis will remain sidelined indefinitely as he continues dealing with an undisclosed health-related matter, the organization announced Wednesday.
The update comes after Porzingis missed training camp and Golden State's first five preseason games.
According to the Warriors, the 31-year-old returned to the team's practice facility Tuesday and met with general manager Mike Dunleavy and vice president of player health and performance Dr. Rick Celebrini.
Although the meeting marked an important development, the team did not provide a timetable for his return.
"The specific contents of that meeting will remain private," the Warriors said in their official statement.
The organization also confirmed that Porzingis will remain around the team while he continues addressing his health. Golden State plans to provide additional information about his potential return to practice and game availability when appropriate.
Shortly after the announcement, Porzingis addressed the situation himself in a social media post, offering an encouraging message about his recovery. The veteran explained that he has been working with medical professionals to better understand his health concerns and determine how to move forward.
"Honestly, I'm getting better and better," Porzingis wrote. "I just have to stay patient, and I believe I'll be feeling great again soon."
Despite that optimism, there is still no indication of when he might return to basketball activities.
The uncertainty presents another challenge for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr as Golden State prepares to open the regular season against the Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 21.
With Stephen Curry entering the later stages of his career, the Warriors are looking to maximize their championship window. Porzingis was expected to play an important role in those efforts, providing another experienced frontcourt option alongside Curry and Draymond Green.
Standing 7-foot-2, the former All-Star brings a unique combination of perimeter shooting, interior scoring and rim protection. His versatility could give Golden State another offensive weapon while providing much-needed size and defensive support in the paint.
His ability to stretch the floor is particularly valuable for a team built around Curry's shooting and Green's playmaking. However, with Porzingis unavailable, Kerr has already begun considering adjustments to his starting lineup.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Kerr is leaning toward a smaller group featuring Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Gui Santos, rookie Yaxel Lendeborg and Green.
That approach would allow Golden State to emphasize ball movement and versatility while relying on Green to handle additional responsibilities at center. Veteran Al Horford could also provide support in the frontcourt, although Kerr has indicated that the Warriors intend to manage his playing time carefully.
Porzingis joined Golden State in February 2026 following a trade with the Atlanta Hawks.

He appeared in 15 games for the Warriors last season, averaging 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
The Warriors further demonstrated their confidence in Porzingis by signing him to a two-year, $40 million extension, making him an important part of their plans moving forward. However, injuries and health concerns have disrupted his career, and his latest absence raises new questions about when Golden State will be able to rely on its veteran big man.
With the regular season approaching, the Warriors now face the challenge of adjusting their rotation without knowing when Porzingis will be healthy enough to return to the court.
For now, the Warriors' priority remains supporting Porzingis as he works toward a return, while Kerr and his coaching staff determine how to adjust their rotation.
Although Wednesday's announcement provided some clarity about his immediate status, the biggest question remains unanswered: when will Porzingis return to the court?
