Bitcoin’s bulls are still talking six figures while the market struggles to hold $81,000. With ten potential market movers approaching and five catalysts capable of reviving momentum, the coming week could settle some arguments.
Key Takeaways
- Bitcoin traded near $81,000 on Oct. 18 after losing roughly 1.3% to 2.2% over seven days.
- Five potential catalysts could help bitcoin reclaim $100,000, including stronger ETF inflows.
- Bitcoin faces 10 market tests during Oct. 19-25, with $80,000 support remaining critical.
Bitcoin’s price enters Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, in a peculiar predicament. The cryptocurrency has spent another week fighting to preserve its footing above $80,000, yet some influential market commentators have been proclaiming the arrival of another bull market this month. The enthusiasm looks rather ambitious against a backdrop of stubborn inflation, institutional fund withdrawals and repeated failures to reclaim $84,000. Still, the optimists have a case worth examining. Moreover, five potential catalysts could eventually carry bitcoin back above $100,000, while ten developments during the coming week threaten to determine whether the market finds its second wind or takes another beating.
Bitcoin’s Rough Week Leaves Bulls Behind the Eight Ball
Bitcoin declined approximately 1.3% to 2.2% over the past seven days, retreating from the $83,700 to $84,000 neighborhood toward $81,000 by Sunday morning. The leading crypto asset tapped an intraday low of $80,888 on Bitstamp at 11:15 a.m. Eastern time.
The trouble began Oct. 12, when BTC slipped toward $81,000 before recovering above $83,000 the following day. That comeback proved short-lived. September’s U.S. consumer price index (CPI), reported at 3.7% annually in the supplied figures, renewed inflation concerns and helped push bitcoin toward $79,700 to $80,200 on Oct. 15. By Sunday, BTC had recovered to approximately $81,950 to $82,100, gaining 0.5% to 0.7% over 24 hours. Trading volume hovered around $13 billion to $15 billion, consistent with comparatively subdued weekend participation.
Resistance remains concentrated between $83,000 and $84,000, while buyers have defended the $80,000 to $81,000 neighborhood. The daily relative strength index (RSI), around 48 to 49, suggests neither side has established convincing control.
Meanwhile, U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced approximately $617 million in October net withdrawals through midmonth. Institutional demand, once the market’s favorite ace in the hole, is facing another test.
10 Developments That Could Shake Bitcoin Next Week
The Oct. 19-25 calendar contains enough economic releases and market developments to keep traders on their toes. Some are scheduled events, while others depend on how institutional investors and leveraged speculators respond.
| No. | Market catalyst | What traders should watch |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | China’s economic report, Oct. 19 | Third-quarter GDP, industrial production and retail sales will offer clues about global growth. Weak figures could pressure bitcoin and other risk assets. |
| 2 | U.S. housing figures, Oct. 20 | Housing starts and building permits will test economic resilience amid elevated borrowing costs, potentially influencing Treasury yields and Fed expectations. |
| 3 | Weekly jobless claims, Oct. 22 | Expectations near 200,000 claims leave room for surprises that could shift interest rate forecasts and cryptocurrency sentiment. |
| 4 | Global business activity, Oct. 23 | Preliminary PMIs from major economies will reveal manufacturing and services conditions, with weak readings potentially dampening risk appetite. |
| 5 | Spot bitcoin ETF flows | October’s reported $617 million in net withdrawals has rattled institutional confidence. Renewed inflows could help restore buying momentum. |
| 6 | Bitcoin’s technical battleground | Support at $80,000 to $81,000 remains crucial. Reclaiming $83,000 to $84,000 could reopen the road toward $86,000 to $87,000. |
| 7 | Futures funding and open interest | Positive funding indicates leveraged bullish positioning. Rising open interest alongside falling prices could intensify liquidation pressure. |
| 8 | Approaching Fed meeting | The Fed’s communications blackout ahead of Oct. 27-28 puts economic releases in the spotlight as traders reassess interest rate expectations. |
| 9 | Stocks, oil and geopolitics | Nasdaq performance, energy prices and Treasury yields could influence bitcoin as investors weigh economic and geopolitical uncertainty. |
| 10 | Corporate buying and onchain activity | Strategy’s accumulation, exchange balances and large-holder transfers could reveal whether investors are absorbing supply or preparing to sell. |
Five Catalysts That Could Put $100,000 Back on the Table
Despite the gloomy technical picture, bitcoin needs an advance of approximately 22% from $82,000 to reclaim six figures. Five potential developments could help deliver that move.
| No. | Bullish catalyst | How it could push bitcoin toward $100,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Revival in institutional ETF demand | U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have attracted more than $56 billion in cumulative net inflows since January 2024. Sustained weekly inflows of $500 million to $1 billion could strengthen demand and tighten available supply. |
| 2 | A friendlier Federal Reserve | Cooling inflation, falling Treasury yields and potential interest rate cuts could improve liquidity conditions, encouraging investors to return to bitcoin and other risk assets. |
| 3 | Greater regulatory clarity | Constructive SEC and CFTC guidance on cryptocurrency custody and trading could remove institutional barriers, opening the door to greater participation from banks, financial advisers and investment firms. |
| 4 | Corporate treasury accumulation | Strategy reportedly holds approximately 848,250 BTC, more than 4% of bitcoin’s eventual supply. Continued corporate acquisitions could intensify competition for available coins and strengthen buying pressure. |
| 5 | Expanded Treasury liquidity support | Larger U.S. Treasury bond buybacks and easing long-term yields could improve financial conditions while reinforcing bitcoin’s appeal as a potential hedge against fiscal deficits, government debt and monetary debasement. |
None guarantees a six-figure bitcoin price. Several working together, however, could substantially improve the market’s prospects.
Bull Market Predictions Meet an Uncomfortable Reality
Interestingly, some cryptocurrency influencers have declared that another bull market is beginning despite October’s lackluster performance. The supplied material does not identify those commentators or provide their statements, leaving the claims unverified.
“Congratulations, the bull market is here,” the X account Crypto Rover wrote last week. “Brace yourself. You’re about to become the first crypto millionaire in your family,” the account added. Two days later, another X account stated:
“This bitcoin signal NEVER fails. Most people feared another crash when the Death Cross flashed. In reality, it has historically marked major BTC cycle bottoms. I called the EXACT bottom using this signal. The bull market is HERE, and ignoring it could be your most expensive mistake.”
The contradiction is nevertheless striking. Bitcoin remains roughly 35% below its October 2025 record near $126,200, institutional flows have weakened, and buyers haven’t convincingly reclaimed nearby resistance. For the bulls, the immediate assignment is straightforward. Defend $80,000, recover $84,000 and demonstrate that institutional demand is returning.
For the bears, another rejection could keep bitcoin trapped in its correction, potentially opening the door to considerably lower prices. The market has heard plenty of predictions about $100,000. This week, it gets another chance to see whether the money agrees.
